On July 5, 2024, BLM crews gathering free-roaming horses in central Wyoming brought in one female hinny. By the end of the operation, 2,577 animals had been gathered, and she was the only hinny listed.

A hinny is the less common reverse of a mule. A mule has a donkey father and a horse mother. A hinny has a horse father and a donkey mother. Both usually end up with 63 chromosomes, one fewer than a horse and one more than a donkey, and both are normally sterile.

Not so long ago, we covered mules living among free-roaming horse herds in the American West. Several of you pointed out in the comments that the reverse hybrid should occasionally turn up out there too. At least one has.

The Wyoming hinny was gathered from the North Lander Complex, four BLM Wild Horse Management Areas spread across central Wyoming. The operation ran from July 1 through July 23. On July 5 alone, crews brought in 225 animals. BLM's daily report added a small footnote to the 89 mares counted that day: one was a hinny. Two days later, the agency noted that the animal had been transferred to the Wyoming Brand Inspector.

The record does not explain how she got there. North Lander is managed as a horse complex, not a mixed horse-and-burro population, and BLM does not say whether the hinny was born free, escaped from private ownership, or joined the horses later. That one line in a gather report is almost all we know about her.

In controlled breeding studies, hinnies have proved harder to produce than mules. In a 2023 experiment, researchers inseminated female donkeys with horse semen through 49 reproductive cycles. Only eight pregnancies resulted, a rate of 16.3 percent. In the same experiment, breeding donkey males to horse mares, the cross that produces mules, resulted in pregnancies in six of 14 cycles, or 42.9 percent. Earlier work involving 159 breeding cycles had produced a similarly low 14.5 percent pregnancy rate for hinnies.

Their rarity also makes them surprisingly poorly studied. Mules have actually been put through controlled cognition experiments. In one test, six mules learned a visual discrimination task significantly better than either six ponies or six donkeys. Another experiment found mules completed a barrier-detour task faster than horses or donkeys. Researchers have suggested that some of the physical hybrid vigor associated with mules may extend to cognition.

Ask the same question about hinnies and the science gets thin very quickly. A 2019 review of mule and hinny behavior noted that many of the behavioral comparisons available for mules simply have not been performed on hinnies. Breeders and handlers describe hinnies as sturdy animals with characteristics inherited from both parents, but there is no equivalent body of cognition work showing whether they share the mule's measured advantage.

Hybridization itself does not automatically make an animal smarter. Studies of other hybrids have produced improved cognition, poorer performance and results between those of the two parent species. But researchers studying equid hybrids have specifically raised the possibility that the cognitive advantages measured in mules could extend to hinnies as well. Nobody has yet run the horse-versus-donkey-versus-hinny experiment needed to find out.

There is not even a reliable count of free-ranging hinnies in the American West. BLM's national population tables count federally managed horses and burros separately; hinnies do not have their own population category.

The North Lander female therefore leaves us with a fairly unusual documented case: one hinny living among free-roaming horses in Wyoming, discovered only because thousands of animals were being gathered and counted individually.

Whether she was born out there or simply found her way into the herd remains unknown.

There is absolutely no shame in quitting beekeeping, and sometimes walking away is the kindest thing you can do for both yourself and your colonies.

Nobody likes to talk about walking away from the apiary, but sticking with it when your body or your mindset can't keep up is an absolute recipe for disaster.

So, in this post, I'll try to give you 3 reasons why you should stop your beekeeping career.

This is not an aggressive post but a mere cryout for those who try to hang on for something that doesn't fit them anymore.

We often romanticize this craft, but the truth is that keeping live bees requires a specific mental headspace, physical capability, and time commitment that not everyone can sustain forever.

The 1st sign is that you have completely lost your patience with the bees.

When you enter an apiary feeling agitated and rushed, your rough movements and slamming frames will send heavy vibrations rippling across the comb.

Bees detect these vibrations instantly, which triggers an immediate defensive response from the guard pool.

Doing that on a regular basis will cause your bees to become highly aggressive and will turn your hobby into a living hell.

You definitely can't keep bees if you lose your patience with them.

The 2nd major reason is that your back hurts every single time you work in the bee yard.

A single 10 frame super packed with honey weighs between 30 and 40 kg, and hunching over a low hive stand puts extreme stress on your lower lumbar spine.

Nobody should be sacrificing their spinal health and spending 3 days stuck in bed just to pull a few jars of honey.

If you love the bees way too much to walk away entirely, you should aggressively cut down your colony count from 20 or 30 hives down to just 2 or 3 manageable boxes (or switch over to a horizontal Layens or long Langstroth hive so you never have to lift a heavy box again 🙂).

You can also craft some stands and pay other people to do the heavy lifting, but I doubt you can afford that on a sustainable basis.

There is no shame in scaling down, and you definitely don't have something to prove.

The 3rd critical reason to stop is when your calendar is so full that you can't find the necessary time to properly manage your bees.

Beekeeping is governed by strict, unforgiving developmental timelines that will not wait around for your free weekends.

If you only inspect your yard once every 10 or 14 days because of work or family life, you will completely miss all the important steps in your colony's development.

Neglected hives also miss critical Varroa treatment windows, allowing viral epidemics to build up and collapse the colony before winter arrives.

That is unfair to the bees and to every neighboring beekeeper around you.

In my opinion, admitting that you don't have the patience, the physical health, or the hours in the day to care for bees is not a failure, but a mature and responsible decision.

A compound found in bee venom just tore through two of the toughest breast cancer cells in under an hour—and left healthy ones mostly alone.

That compound is melittin. In lab tests, it didn't just slow cancer down—it wiped it out fast. And because it can be made synthetically, we don't need a million bees to make it happen.

Melittin works by punching holes in cancer cell membranes. It's particularly effective against triple-negative and HER2-enriched breast cancers—the aggressive ones that are hardest to treat. In some studies, it even helped chemotherapy work better.

Still, this is early-stage science. It's been tested in labs and animals, not yet in humans. No clinical trials have been completed, and it's not a treatment you can ask for today. But the results so far are sharp enough to pay attention.
