That sunset looks good on you, #402. This young lady is 75% South Poll like most of our herd but she just might be the prettiest, IMO. She is bred to a fullblood South Poll bull and should be calving a 7/8 South poll calf in about a week 💪🏻🕺🏻🤠

Well we got to check something off of Hayden’s bucket list! We were interviewed on one of our favorite podcasts this winter and it just got posted this morning. Jared is a great guy and a world class podcaster. We have learned so much from him and his guests over the past few years and it was an honor to share our story on his platform. Thank you ranchingreturnspodcast !

Finally captured Hayden on camera 😉 Here’s a little rundown of how we are managing our grazing on our farm and what we are looking at as far as rumen fill, spring vegetation, and calving season. Always learning, always trying new things!

Checking beans tonight and snapped this picture of our pasture from our neighbors side of the fence that the grain operation rents.

1. It’s just a pretty picture of Meppen in a late Sunday afternoon in spring 🍀 😎 also sharing one of the 3 musketeers sneaking under the wire and causing trouble 🤠

2. A little more technical but it illustrates our grazing management via Ultra High Density (UHD) grazing; more specifically, the Total Grazing program. Notice the cattle aren’t spread out all over the landscape but rather kept together as a herd/mob. Many farms/ranches all over the world are able to double or triple their yearly stocking rates just through this style of management. That’s the equivalent of buying another ranch or two! It may take a little more time than just giving them access to the whole farm but the ROI is definitely there. And maybe the best part is that it just gets better and better each year. Now that’s regenerative ag at its finest!

Jerry Reed is eastbound and down, but we’re just trying to get high and dry! Got way more rain than expected and trying to keep the herd safe, as there are several hundred acres of farm ground that drain through our property.

In a world where most of what you see on your phone is 💩, we should all take a moment to realize what good quality 💩 really looks like and learn why we should give a 💩 about good quality 💩. This 💩 right here is not too firm and not too loose. Whoever deposited this beautiful 💩 has a balanced diet and is efficiently and profitably processing her forage. Good 💩 like this is the lifeblood and biggest health marker of our farm.

Moral of the story, life is a 💩 sandwich. Let’s all do our part to remove our own bad 💩 and produce and recognize good 💩. If you’re going to have a 💩 day, I pray it is 💩 like this 💩. 🙏🕺🏻

Blumen calf #2 is on the ground and healthy! This momma was the heifer calf that we got with our dairy cow a few years ago. She is a pure bred Mutt! 😂

She has been bagged up for over a week now and been keeping us on edge. She gave us a nice little black heifer calf that the kids are fighting to name. Thus far we’ve got “Isabel” (this was Rodney’s suggestion because his birthday is close to cousin Isabel’s) and “Black Star” which is Josie’s suggestion… To daddy, she’s #602 and we’re happy to have her 🙌🕺🏻

Went for a family Sunday sunset stroll last night to check for calves and inspect fence. Snagged this pic from on top our levee. Pictures never do a Calhoun sunset justice… If you zoom in and know where you’re looking, you can see the St. Joseph’s steeple. God is good all the time! 🙌✝️

I spy with my little eye 👀

A free dozen eggs to the first person to comment with a screenshot and a circle on the calf in this first pic! This little #601 has proven to be a hide-n-seek champion!

Also, random pic of Ray’s Muscovy ducks enjoying a swim in the creek on this fine morning 😎

Here’s a snapshot of where our Sievers Blumen herd is headed this year: We are on track to have 14 calves this spring. These young, expecting mommas are enjoying corn stalk residue, a rye cover crop, and free choice grass hay. What they consume has a huge impact on what their calves will require to thrive in the future.

For that reason, we choose not to grain feed our momma cows even though they aren’t in our grass-finished beef program. If they are given grain while pregnant, then we won’t know which ones can make it on grass alone, and their offspring will be more likely to require grain as a crutch in order to thrive.

We know they will glean from some of the corn left in the field, but it is extremely minimal. We limit how much of the field they get at one time so they don’t gorge on any of that candy that was left behind by the combine. This is our approach at building a low input, resilient herd that is well adapted to our farm.
