With Tropical Storm Edouard bringing heavy rainfall into parts of Texas, now is a good time to keep a close eye on your lake.

After a long, hot summer, many unaerated lakes have developed layers of warm, oxygenated water near the surface and cooler, low-oxygen water near the bottom.

A sudden influx of cooler rainwater, runoff and wind can cause these layers to mix rapidly - a process commonly called "lake turnover".

When that happens, dissolved oxygen can drop quickly throughout the lake and, in severe cases, cause a fish kill.

Watch for fish gathering at the surface, near incoming water or around fountains and other areas of moving water - especially early in the morning. These can be signs of low dissolved oxygen. To try and prevent this from happening, we usually recommend an aeration system that is appropriately sized for your pond or lake.
