Here is an update from our Beekeeper, Les! 🐝
There have been a lot of changes here at the bee hives. We started the year with three hives, but unfortunately lost one. Last week we took delivery of two new bee colonies, known as a nucleus, complete with a queen and five frames of workers, pollen, brood and honey. So now we have four hives, two existing and two new. We added brood boxes to the top of each hive to give the bees room to grow and make more bees. We do this to jump start the bees during the spring season when flowers are abundant. In a month we will add another layer, known as a honey super. I just finished building them from kits. This is where we will harvest the honey from, sometime around July 4th. That is our plan anyway. God, nature, the bees, and the misunderstandings of the bee keeper in regard to his charges may change that plan. Meanwhile we are forging ahead in anticipation of a good honey harvest.
Over the winter I finished building a website for myself, and bee-curious folks, to watch the bees, the weather, and how the weather affects the bees. It is heavy on science. I invite you to take a look at https://deepblueanalysis.com/BeeWeather/AG_Farms/Operational/About.html
There is a link to a weather station that has been at the Farm since March 9th: https://deepblueanalysis.com/BeeWeather/AG_Farms/Operational/WeatherStation.html It records temperature, humidity, winds, pressure, sunlight and rainfall; all of which are important to bees.
Within the next month there should be an active link to a camera focused on one of the bee hives that will allow you to watch the bees coming and going.
Till next time,
The Bee Keeper.
