Tutorial on how to collect DNA samples on your freshly hatched chicks!

Today, we are sending some samples to Little Haven Homestead & DNA Lab so I decided we could make a video on how to do the process.

Take the guess work and waiting period out of the equation and know the gender of your chicks from the start!

Start out by gathering all your supplies to make your life easier. You'll need ziplock baggies, paper towels or alcohol swabs, rubbing alcohol, cat nail trimmers, colored rubber bands or zip ties, coffee filter and scissors, corn starch and a sharpie. You'll also need a piece of paper and pen to use as a guide for the company processing your samples.

Start out by labeling everything and having your sample tools ready to go. I like to cut a paper towel into strips and use them as alcohol swabs, but you can use actual alcohol swabs too.

You'll need to make sure your nail trimmers are sanitized, making sure not to touch the cutting area.

Get your chick and sanitize that toe/toe nail with your alcohol, and then clip the toe nail where the pink starts. Be careful not to touch this area once it's sanitized so you don't contaminate your sample. "Milk" the sample to have a dot pooled at the top and dab your coffee filter to the sample. Careful not to touch the area you're collecting your sample at. Once you've saturated the end of your coffee filter with the sample, take some corn starch and dab it to the toe nail to clot it.

Band your chick with the corresponding colored band and let your sample dry.

Repeat the process until all of your samples are completed.
