It’s been a while since we have posted anything. After the loss of the harvest, we got busy with other projects on the property, and the days seem to come and go so quickly that it’s hard to believe we are now celebrating Thanksgiving.

After the planting of the fig trees, something kept pulling them out of the ground - we believe either a skunk or raccoon or both. Fortunately, the root system was healthy and survived after three or four episodes of replanting. Then, during a wind storm, a tree came down over the deer fence and the deer came in and nibbled on some of the fig trees. We were able to protect them with netting. We do know that our winter weather will cause them to die back but we’re hoping for good regrowth in the spring.

The grape vines are dormant and will not need attention until pruning time. We are concerned with the possibility of invasion of the Spotted Laternfly insect which will be a problem for the vines. It’s been found in Morgantown and Grafton and will eventually get to our area.

However, we have so much to be thankful for during this Thanksgiving season and really throughout the year. And we want to wish you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration!

After assessment of the vineyard, unfortunately, what looked to be a very good season has now deteriorated. Initially, we counted up to an average of 20 clusters per plant. But there’s been a change after the extreme weather we have experienced in that the grapes are falling off the clusters. We believe the downpours of rain followed by high temperatures and humidity have caused excessive growth of vines and foliage putting the plants in stress which has been the cause of the individual grapes dropping. The crop that is left is not enough to sustain a Upick, and so we must cancel that this year. We will miss seeing all the folks we have met from the past Upicks, and hopefully, we will be back next year to see everyone again and make new friends and memories.

News from the vineyard: The foliage in the vineyard is very thick this year, we believe due to all the rain. We have done a canopy management hoping to rectify this situation somewhat. Unfortunately, the plants are becoming stressed with growing that much foliage and vines, and it is affecting the grape clusters. We have been concerned about this for the past few weeks. Today, we will be doing a final assessment of both vineyards as to the viability of the upcoming harvest and will be posting the outcome.

We have had such fluctuations in weather lately and have worried about the effects of late frosts and high winds for the vineyard. While working in the vines over the past few days, we have found some damage but have also found some sweet surprises.

We’re in the middle of pruning the vines. We should have started earlier but we were both down with that flu/virus for several weeks. It’s always a nice surprise when we find the birds’ nests.
