Nechanicky Farms is a family farming operation established in 1902 that raises corn and soybeans thru strip-till/no-till practices. We implement RTK GPS to maximize inputs and productivity thru autoguidance, rate controlling, yield mapping, etc. We feed out the calves and offer them direct to the customer for custom butcher(1/4, 1/2) or have retail cuts available for purchase.

We finally had our last calf April 10. Always seems the last couple cows like to wait as long as possible to calve.

I was able to get out and finish strip-tilling by the 2nd week of April. Conditions were great, and made some beautiful strips.

At the end of March I had knee surgery for a torn meniscus. Thankfully it was a rainy & wet week following surgery making it easier to follow Dr's orders to stay off it.

After I finished strip-tilling I got started planting. Put in some short season corn with the plan to get it off early to turn cows out on the stalks. But of course I didn't start planting until I picked a few rocks out of the fields. I think about 5 loads with the skidsteer for rocks to big for me to lift, and 6-7 loads with the Ranger.

Today Carson Nechanicky planted some sweet corn.

We pulled this calf Sunday night, he was coming forward but mama was struggling. Saw him suck but question if he got enough. Monday morning he was quite chilled so we put him in the shop. He wasn't doing very well, think he caugh pneumonia. We kept him in the shop most of the week. He would just lay around, had to physically lift him up to get him to stand. It's like he flipped a switch yesterday and was feeling a lot better. This morning I walked him to the barn after feeding him. He was still being aggressive after drinking 5pints. He took after the cows well. Finally found his mama and she loved on him right away. Figured after 3+ days she'd lose interest. We'll keep our eye on him to make sure he's doing OK and handling the cold weather after enjoying the 60° shop..

I spent this week in Colorado at the High Plains No-Till Conference where I was asked to present during a couple breakout sessions.

I got home just in time as we were suppose to start calving this week. One cow dropped a calf while Lindsey Nechanicky was picking me up from the airport. Tonight this lil guy was breech and had to be pulled.

Mitchell took over for me seeding cereal rye for a cover crop. I bought specialty seed discs for the meters to be able to run small grains through the planter. It's a lot better taking a 40' swath vs a 15' with the grain drill!

I have to acknowledge how much the boys have been helping! They've put in quite of bit of time running equipment this fall with combining corn & beans, running the grain cart and draggin' waggins chopping silage.
The twins even ran the combine & grain cart this year.

I really don't like getting kicked out of the combine, but it sure is fun to watch the boys run the equipment like professionals!

We got a 300' bag of silage chopped to keep the cattle fat & happy.

Finished up harvesting seed beans and jumped back to corn. Corn has dried down quite a bit while harvesting soybeans. That will help save on LP expense for drying and can push the corn thru a lot quicker.

Earlier this summer the two older boys had the opportunity to go to Washington DC as part of a school trip. Lindsey and I went along as chaperones, and to see it all as well since we've never been. It was a great experience for all of us!

Beginning of August I started destroying male rows. Thankfully it wasn't muddy like it had been just a couple weeks earlier for the guys detasseling. I had my fair share of challenges with rows not lining up and severe washouts from the abundant rain this spring. Only had one issue with bent metal. Thankfully it wasn't too difficult to fix.

We have had a busy summer so far! I'll try to catch up since the last post.

Just today we had a group from Australia visit the farm. They are making a tour of the midwest. It was great to host them for the morning.

After all the rain, we lost a handful of bales from the flooding. But was able to get the majority of the field planted to soybeans.

We had 50ac that we turned cows out on the rye for a couple months. Pulled them off end of May and planted the field to corn.

The boys helped finish building fence so we could get cows turned out on the pasture. It sure goes faster with all the help.

Carson got his school permit, which allows him to drive up to 25miles for work. So he ran the tender wagon for me while sprayer. He really enjoyed getting job offers from the co-op to run their tender when he was done here. 😅

July 15 we were hit with the beginnings of another derecho. Thankfully we didn't get the winds, but did get hail. There was very mild damage to the crops and minimal damage to the buildings.

Had 12 acres of rye I had originally planned to bale. But it was too thick the hay mower kept plugging up. So I ended up letting it go to grain and combined it last week.

We have gotten over 4" of rain the last 2 days, 2.5" of that last night/early this morning. I think it's starting to show....
