Friendly Horse Acres is now open to folks looking to visit a horse farm. Meeting horses, petting and grooming are all part of the visit. We especially want to welcome people who might be a little shy around equines, and children who want to meet a real horse rather than riding. Please phone to make an appointment. A minimum donation of $20 is appreciated at the time of the visit. Note the phone number 360-825-3628 does not accept text messages.

I have decided to start a blog, and most to the entries will be related to Friendly Horse Acres. I'm doing it, as much for my own writing enjoyment, but I would like to think a few people are reading it. At the moment, it is open to the public. This many change, but for now anyone can have a look.
[email protected] should get you in for a look. My phone pulled it up, so I'm hoping it is accessible.
I am also in the process of learning podcasting. More on that later. Meanwhile, keep horsing around.

Our beloved draft horse, Bonnie, crossed the rainbow bridge today. Most of you did not know her. She was not with us for long. She came from the Enumclaw auction about three years ago, and she appeared to enjoy her retirement years with us. Shilo, the Quarter Pony has been her constant companion. Up until the last month, she has exhibited excellent health. The veterinarian thinks she had some neurological issues, and she lost control of her hind quarters. We miss her, especially at feeding time when she "talked" to us over a stall door, demanding immediate attention. (She usually got it, too.) She was a ton of love.

A year ago, almost to the day, our beloved Cactus passed away. Now, a year later her companion, Bosley has crossed the Rainbow Bridge to join her. He had a ruptured intestine, and his passing was fast. He will be missed. He was a skilled pony who did cart and riding lessons, as well as agility.

We would like to find a trainer for Shilo and Bonnie. Positive, gentle methods only, please. Both horses have some training, and both are willing. If you are a trainer, or know of someone, give us a call at 360-825-3628.
Steve has said he wants to sell Bonnie, but if she had some training, I think he would be more agreeable to keep her. Her firm price would be $2,500 (or more), to the right home. The same phone number applies.

It has been a sad day. Our beloved, last, Exmoor Pony climbed the Rainbow Bridge today. Cactus was 36 years young, and up until yesterday morning feisty and enthusiastic about life. She became disinterested in food, and spent a lot of time resting in the last 30 hours. There are no longer registered Exmoor Ponies in Washington State. The end of an era. Hopefully someone else will appreciate these remarkable, peerless equines.

Friendly Horse Acres is flooded today. The main barn is under 8 inches of water. The second barn is not quite as bad, and the tack room is safe - so far. The city has tried to help, but only the rain stopping will make the situation better. The ditch that takes our excess water through a series of french drains was not engineered to take a lot of water. We have lost hay, grain, and horse treats. Of course, any help is welcome. The horses, most of whom are without dry shelter for their feet, are probably grateful it is not freezing.

Thank you, thank you to all the folks who helped us get new shavings to cover the arena! Your donations are always appreciated, but the contributions last spring made a huge dent in the cost.
And we also have to thank the wonderful volunteers who came to make the spreading of the shavings a rapid chore. In the past, it has taken two people a full day to spread the shavings, but on Saturday afternoon, with so many working hands it took us less that half an hour. Wow!
We have great supporters!

Our wonderful, board member, Tashina Calton, has created a fundraiser for us! Thanks to all of you who help by donating to our organization.
We received the check from my (Laverne's) birthday fundraiser, and we will let everyone know when the wood shavings are ordered for the arena.
Hopefully, Tashina's fundraiser will give us enough to have a generous footing for the next coming years. Let's hope the wind doesn't blow another top away, but for once we should have a financial cushion. These fundraisers are sure appreciated!
