Rose’s story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes the most incredible surprises come from giving an animal a second chance.

Rose is a Jenny, the name given to a female donkey. She was rescued from a livestock auction and brought to Hooves of Hope and Legacy Farms. When she arrived, she was in rough shape. She was very thin, malnourished, and deeply afraid of people. It was clear that trust was something she had lost along the way.

Over the following months, we gave Rose exactly what she needed—good nutrition, a safe place to call home, and plenty of patience. We never rushed her. Day by day, she began to realize that the hands reaching toward her were there to offer kindness, not harm. Watching her slowly learn to trust again has been one of the greatest rewards of rescue
Then, about a year after Rose joined our family, we received the surprise of a lifetime.

One morning, we discovered that Rose had given birth to a beautiful little Jenny of her own! We had no idea she was pregnant when we rescued her, making the arrival of her baby a complete and wonderful surprise. We named her Poppy, and from the very beginning she has been full of curiosity, personality, and joy.

Today, Rose and Poppy spend their days together, enjoying the peace and safety they were always meant to have. Rose has transformed into a loving, gentle mother, and watching Poppy grow up surrounded by love has been an incredible gift.

Their story reminds us that rescue is about more than saving one life. Sometimes, without even knowing it, you’re saving two.

Every time you see Rose and Poppy together, you’re witnessing what love, patience, and a second chance can accomplish.

🦓 Norris is our handsome Plains zebra, and while he’s certainly one of the most eye-catching residents here at Legacy Farms, his story is about much more than his beautiful stripes.

Before coming to us, Norris found himself in a difficult situation. We learned that he needed a new home after he seriously injured his previous owner. Because of his aggressive behavior, he was being kept in a very small paddock. While safety was understandably the priority, zebras are naturally built to roam long distances, and a limited environment can often contribute to stress and behavioral challenges.

On March 13, 2024, Norris made the journey to Legacy Farms and Hooves of Hope, where he was given the opportunity for a fresh start.

Today, Norris enjoys a large pasture where he can run, graze, and observe the many other animals that call the sanctuary home. Although he is surrounded by friends, he currently lives in his own pasture. As an intact male zebra, his natural instincts and elevated testosterone make it unsafe for him to share space with other horses or equines.

Our next goal for Norris is to have him gelded. This important procedure will help reduce those hormone-driven behaviors and, with time and careful introductions, we hope it will allow him to safely share a pasture with companions. Zebras are social animals, and our greatest hope is to one day see Norris living peacefully alongside other equines, enjoying the companionship he deserves.

Rescue isn’t always about fixing what’s broken—sometimes it’s simply about providing the right environment, the patience to understand an animal’s needs, and the opportunity for a better future.

Norris reminds us every day that every animal deserves a second chance, and we are honored to be part of his journey.
