Rose’s story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes the most incredible surprises come from giving an animal a second chance.
Rose is a Jenny, the name given to a female donkey. She was rescued from a livestock auction and brought to Hooves of Hope and Legacy Farms. When she arrived, she was in rough shape. She was very thin, malnourished, and deeply afraid of people. It was clear that trust was something she had lost along the way.
Over the following months, we gave Rose exactly what she needed—good nutrition, a safe place to call home, and plenty of patience. We never rushed her. Day by day, she began to realize that the hands reaching toward her were there to offer kindness, not harm. Watching her slowly learn to trust again has been one of the greatest rewards of rescue
Then, about a year after Rose joined our family, we received the surprise of a lifetime.
One morning, we discovered that Rose had given birth to a beautiful little Jenny of her own! We had no idea she was pregnant when we rescued her, making the arrival of her baby a complete and wonderful surprise. We named her Poppy, and from the very beginning she has been full of curiosity, personality, and joy.
Today, Rose and Poppy spend their days together, enjoying the peace and safety they were always meant to have. Rose has transformed into a loving, gentle mother, and watching Poppy grow up surrounded by love has been an incredible gift.
Their story reminds us that rescue is about more than saving one life. Sometimes, without even knowing it, you’re saving two.
Every time you see Rose and Poppy together, you’re witnessing what love, patience, and a second chance can accomplish.
