Welcome to our newest endeavor...WE BOUGHT A FARM! Our recent move to the Kansas City area led us to pursue a dream of owning a farm, so we bought almost 12 acres of crops in Bucyrus, Kansas, just 18 miles South of Leawood, Kansas and close to the State Line. Join us on our journey as we use this page to post our trials and tribulations of owning land. From working with an architect, to picking a builder, to getting all utilities to the property, to developing a cut floral farm business and more!

4th time’s a charm? I really hope so. This was the AFTER of our 100’ high tunnel up against 50 mph winds before Thanksgiving. SWIPE for before photos. We’ve installed and tweaked this tunnel 3 times. It made it through 20+ mph, but was shredded after the 50’s. Feeling so defeated, but not ready to give up on my season extension growing capabilities. Thousands of tulips were slated for this tunnel. I just can’t catch a break on getting things in the ground on time. Wish me luck. 💨 @ Bucyrus, Kansas

Layla’s chickens made their debut last night at her school’s Living Nativity. They were kept company by a mini-horse, baby calf, mini-donkey and goat. The choir singing, hayrides, hot chocolate, cookies and St. Nick top off the event. So fun!! @ Wea, Kansas

This is what we signed up for. It’s been the most challenging past 2 years of adjusting to a new town and hopping around to 5 different residences, but we are so lucky to be where we are in life. Last summer we lived in our RV in Peculiar, MO at an RV park for 4 months and now we are coming up on 5 months back in the RV...but on our farm this time. It’s SO nice to be home. Just when I managed to master keeping us cool, or at least somewhat comfortable, in the RV during the summer, the frosts hit us sooner than we had hoped. Days and nights with our water hydrant frozen and furnace not working in the RV were frustrating, but more than tolerable. We are so lucky that we have a shelter to call home and we wouldn’t honestly trade it for anything else. Chris and myself are regularly finding ourselves saying out loud, “Can you believe we are doing this?” And “It’s so good to be here on this little farm.” This Sunday we celebrate our 12 year wedding anniversary and we are definitely better than we’ve ever been together. Can’t wait to share our home with friends and family when it’s finished. So much of what and why we are doing this is to share it with others. 🖤

Is it his obsession with cowboy hats or that he’s stuffed in the little Cushman that make me wonder? Maybe it’s the blinker that he thinks he need to use when driving on our own driveway. 🙄

We’ve had a lot of rain the past few months and some cooler temps at night too. The rain hasn’t helped progress with our home build, but it’s been good for our flower fields and our no till pasture conversion. When it’s not raining, I’m lucky to be able to work, whether real estate or flower farming, outside and watch the sun set off the back of my truck. 🌅

Finally have ONE luffa getting bigger on this 100’ long fence. Frustrating to see it thrive only to be eaten by the huge grasshoppers when they are smaller luffas. Growing naturally has its challenges and ends in some failures, but the wins are worth it and I just have to keep plugging along. I did find 3 smaller luffas on the vine today, so I’m hopeful they don’t disappear overnight. 🤞🏼 @ Bucyrus, Kansas

6 days from harvest and these zinnias are still going strong. Stiff necks, long stems and bright colors. We are still waiting for electric on the farm, so the walk-in cooler is not usable yet. I left these outside our chicken coop in the sun for 6 days...no floral preservative, just a bit of water and they are still looking fresh!

Have you ever seen a shell-less egg? This happens when your young hens start laying...just the membrane with an intact egg inside. Pretty cool. It can also be a sign of low calcium in the chicken’s diet or some type of disruption during the egg laying process, but this is only the third one out of 20 eggs that has been shell-less.

Might be one of my all-time favorite quotes. I was cleaning out some storage bins and found this torn out of a magazine. Who knew this would speak to me more now than ever as we keep diving into our adventure with our flower farm, animals, living full-time in an RV and building our house. We’ll just keep on keepin’ on.

We moved! Well, sort of. Since moving to KC from St. Louis almost 2 years ago, this is our 5th move. We bought this farm at the end of 2017 and have been on a roller coaster of a journey to get the flower farm going and build our new modern barn home. Now, after 3 different apartments and one RV park, we are finally home...we’ll, almost. This airstream, Betsy, will be our home for the next 6-10 months. We have been tucked by our barn and living in it for the past month, but decided to move it to a higher spot on the farm. No electric yet, but we are using a generator when needed. So far, after the heat warning week we had, we’ve been able to not use our AC for over a week. Nights have dipped into the 60s and it is glorious. Anxious for our home ground-breaking, but cherishing these experiences for now. It’s been a crazy, fun ride so far.

Last night’s blooms...Layla planted some pro-cut sunflowers a few months ago so we would have some color in the field as we work to get our bed infrastructure in place. Not spaced for long slender stems for cut, but I’m glad she planted them. We had a nice view as we hand picked weed covered beds. #notilltakesalotlongerandmoremuscle @ Bucyrus, Kansas

We moved back into our trailer full-time a week ago and our only source of electric is running a generator. Not the most convenient or environmentally-friendly option, but we are patiently waiting for KCPL to give us our temporary electric and for our number to come up in the backlog of jobs the excavators have due to all the heavy rains the last few months. Our house will hopefully be starting very soon, but I feel like I’ve been saying this for over a year now. 🤞 @ Bucyrus, Kansas

Stargazing on the trampoline after doing our regular nightly routine...locking the chickens in the coop and pen so the bobcats and fox can’t get them, locking up the barn cat food so the raccoons don’t try to tear up the barn and checking on seedling trays and plants in the ground.

Welcome to our new, little flower truck! It is retiring from its Boeing plant work duty and will now live the rest of its life on our farm. Not sure how we will modify/beautify it yet, but in the next year or two when we have blooms to sell, this will be a great little rolling flower bar for events. Thank you Fire Lake Soapery in Paola, KS for the lead on the truck. 😊

Who needs a Luffa? I’m trialing this dishcloth gourd to see how well it grows and produces natural luffas. These need more patience than other seedlings as I won’t be harvesting them until after the last frost. I’m so hopeful they will do well here so I can sell them as an eco dishwashing or body-washing sponge. 🌱

Such a great message about how going back to diversified farming can make a huge difference in not just the health of our soils, but in turn the health of us and the animals that rely on what grows from those healthier soils. Thank you Paula Rocco for introducing this to me.
