The summer regulars are all but done. Now it’s time to turn beds over for winter starts. Feels weird to even say that out loud in this heat. Today as I am laying the herbs out to dry I am thinking about Ms Dolly. Still grieving that beautiful light.

The one thing going strong now is the lemongrass. I’m keeping her. She’s fragrant, a delicious soothing tea blend and thriving in hot humid tunnels.

I can hold lemongrass and lavender as perennial rows in this bed so we’re going to give it a shot!

There are many things on the farm named Dolly. Not because she’s beautiful, a southern icon you simply don’t go without, or because we grew up with her. It was always her heart.
At a time where women had a huge fight, she was pure class and moved her chess pieces behind the scenes. When diversity became a weapon she partnered with communities and got on the front lines to show inclusivity. She cared for children, she created an economy in a little mountain town, and she genuinely loved deeply.
Thank you Dolly. We will always love you.

Where is the Blackbird 🐦‍⬛ of Blackbird Farm ?
Charity goes on pilgrimage not only for health healing and learning but also as a secret mission to connect with farmers, chefs, and many more amazing people away from the farm. They truly help our view of the world and our farm grow from these experiences every year.
This year she returned to France to assist in a pilgrimage of women and drive them all over the countryside. Along the way they saw sacred sites, participated in holy days, and Charity cooked meals using delicious fresh produce.

It’s the time of year!
Peckerina Featherington ( Flock) disappeared about 21 days ago into the a-frame coop in a little hole she laid with feather and hay. Yesterday while checking on her I saw some little teeny tiny heads pop up, and the distinct chittering of little chick peeps. I’ve moved her, her babies, and the last eggs in her clutch inside for safety.
She hatched 4 inside already!
Because our coops open to the woods, sitting on her babies, she’s prime target for snakes.
They’ll stay inside for the next 6 to 8 weeks, and then I’ll move them to a temporary brooder cage while the babies get some wildness awareness on them.
Peck’s part of our “surprise” hatch from last year and one of the hens that provides eggs for the farm market. The fact that she’s such a great layer and a good mom means that these hens in the future are going to be docile, sweet, and very good egg layers as well.

Aquatic errands for a major change to our system: County water killed our fish. 🤦🏻‍♀️ in 5 years trust that we had about a million redundant backups. So that was fun.
Charity fell in love with her soul mate and spirit animal : Sassy lobster 🦞 🖕🏻I think we can agree it’s definitively a whole vibe.
