As we say goodbye to summer, we have a special full-circle story to share. In 2022, Paislee Stevens won the heifer supreme contest at the Johnson County Fair. One of the awards is to select a replacement heifer from a participating county ranch. Paislee took a chance on us and with her sharp eye, picked out a daughter of an unproven first-calf heifer - E L K Blueblood Lady W539-H6. Fast forward 4 years and H6 has become a staple dam in our program. Paislee’s built her own little herd around that heifer she won. This year, she came back to fair with a granddaughter of her award heifer with a Can Am Defender bull calf at side. Not only did she win supreme heifer again, but she won reserve champion heifer for the whole show. We’re thrilled to offer a replacement heifer back to the county program again, and look forward to seeing which next up-and-comer Paislee finds this year in the replacement pen.

It was fun seeing ELK genetics throughout county fair and another shout-out goes to Dallas Hepp who won heaviest steer and took home the carcass award with her ELK-backed genetics.

This has been the longest, shortest summer ever. 🥵 We’re like everyone in the West - chasing grass and *especially* water. We moved cows to our second summer pasture on the mountain and this video goes into how we’re blending traditional high-country ranching and technology to make it easier on the cows, our horses/dogs, and ourselves. This locate-contain-and-gather strategy worked great for our operation. We’ve found vibration cues from Halter (how they know to move forward to a new area) helpful when they can see other cows, which means it’s less effective in timber, but we have used the app to locate and bunch cows into meadows and continue to ride horseback to move these bunches together the longer distances. It’s done a great job containing boundaries, so we don’t have to gather and ride as far as we once did. Our kids were able to ride with us because we didn’t have to ride dark timber to locate and were able to have a shorter day overall, too. The real bonus for us was knowing EVERY cow was accounted for and by leaving the physical gate open, we could watch behavior on Halter to ensure everyone had paired up inside the new pasture. We’re continuing to use it to monitor activity around water sources because that’s been a challenge this summer. There’s such an emotionally-driven debate on social media right now about incorporating new technologies into ranching, and we have no interest in taking part in that debate. As seedstock ranchers, we’ve seen firsthand how cattle operations are all uniquely different around the country. We’re thrilled with how our mountain ground and use of Halter is affording us to be better stewards, use our time and horses/dogs more wisely, and spend more time all together doing what we love. The peace of mind knowing our cattle are safe, healthy, and accounted for makes sense for us. We’ll spend another month in this pasture and rotate to our fall mountain pasture, which we pray has water to hold the girls until snow starts to fly.

We put Halter satellite virtual fencing collars on our cows last month knowing that it would be a game changer for our operation. It doesn’t replace ranching - we still actively manage the grass, cattle health, gathering, etc. But, it is helping us be better informed, more precise, and less stressed! We’re just a few weeks in, and it’s already helped us: 1) identify where cattle are finding water during an unprecedented drought year with no run off 2) help a heifer who got stuck in a log fence 3) keep the cows off our neighbor’s permit (where they can see water) and out of the next pasture rotation where internal fencing is poor in an active logging area 4) monitor heat detections to ensure we are adequately stocking our bull power 5) locate cattle before we ride the mountain for healths to ensure we aren’t missing putting our eyes on anyone. 6) drought pasture management 🙃

The high-selling bull was lot 8, purchased by Oshoto Flying M Operations of Gillette, WY, for $22,000. Other highlights include: Lot 23 - Jarrid Dubas (NE), $20,000; Lot 2 - Tanner Ragsdale (KS), $16,000; Lot 21, Lyman Ranches ($15,500); Lot 6 - Jana Haynie (MT), $15,000; Lot 16 - Lawrence Ranches (WY), $15,000; Lot 18 - Lyman Ranches (WY), $15,000.

The Y5 flush went to Deep Creek Angus of Midland, SD.

Cattle went to WY, MT, CO, SD, NE, WA, IA, and CA.

We'll be headed down the road delivering these cattle in the coming weeks, and then we're back at it, busy making 2027 and 2028 bull sale cattle as we head into spring and breeding season.
