I am deeply concerned that a pharmaceutical company has purchased the rennet supply. I will be ordering a bottle of calf rennet before they can adulterate it.

Next Spring, I will be installing a stinging nettle patch. In the meantime, I will try and find local safe patches.

Meet Joy and Snickers — the Sweetest Comeback Kids at Bookworm Farm

These two are Joe’s Spice Lady’s granddaughters, and they’ve had quite the journey. Their dam, Miracle, was loaned out and didn’t get the feed or care she needed. The girls came home stunted, skinny, and looking like they’d been through a hard chapter. Miracle didn’t make it, but her daughters did.

Joy and Snickers are still on the scrawny side, but they’re improving fast — bright eyes, good appetite, and a whole lot of sweetness. Joy is the shy one, gentle and thoughtful. Snickers is the bold one, always ready to check your pockets for snacks.

In the photo, they’re standing with their half‑sister at the top, a Nubian × Kiko (unavailable).

One of these girls will be available as a yearling next season. I haven’t decided which yet — you can’t keep them all, even when your heart wants to.

Bookworm Farm Update — Goats, Cheese, and Auction Adventures

This week was a bit of a roller coaster. PAYS (Billings) treated the dairy crosses well at $2.68/lb. Last year was $1.25/lb. The meat weanlings came in at $2.98/lb, which is down from last year by about thirty cents, but still respectable.

Milk and cheese sales were basically a ghost town — one fifth of milk sold and zero cheese — but the kitchen is still busy. Two pots of cheese going, jars drying, and goats acting like they deserve applause for every drop of milk.

And for those who’ve been asking (and asking, and asking):
Goat meat is coming soon.
I’ll announce availability as soon as it’s ready.

Thanks to everyone who sticks with small farms. You’re the reason this place keeps humming.

Bookworm Farm – Jar Deposit Policy Update
A quick reminder for our milk customers:

Our milk jars use specialty one‑piece lids that are reusable and cost about $2 each to replace. Because of this, our deposit applies to both the jar and the lid together.

It’s printed right on every jar:
“Please return jar and lid for deposit.”

To keep milk available and affordable for everyone, we can only issue a deposit refund when both pieces are returned.

No lid = no refund.

Thank you for helping us keep Bookworm Farm running smoothly and making sure jars and lids come home so we can continue offering fresh milk.

Had fun with CoPilot on this one.

Joel Salatin writes a lot about land, animals, and the kind of farming that keeps you honest. Around here, it’s been months without mud; just drought, dust, and the daily work that still has to get done.

Bookworm Farm runs on that same idea he talks about: small‑scale, hands‑on care, whether the ground is soaked or bone‑dry. The goats still need milking, the chores still happen, and the milk you get from us comes from real work done every single day.

If you enjoy the milk, cheese, or farm updates we share, Salatin’s books give a deeper look into the kind of farming you’re supporting. The kind that keeps going, no matter what the weather throws at us.
