Chicken Lips Apps Developing apps for families/teachers who want to improve a child's speech,language or early literacy skills.

Children with autism, apraxia, and phonological needs, respond favorably to simple repetitive phrases which are set to predictable melodies. These apps are designed by a a team of three professionals who have been linking their individual skills for 13 years. The collaborative team consists of Judy Fjell, music educator from Helena, Montana, Karen Tanner graphic art designer and instructor from Billings, MT, and Beverly Kenik, Speech-Language Pathologist from Buffalo, Wy.

Most kids like to "spin" or see things spin! Make the most of this and add an alphabet chart, or other chart with targets for the child. Let the child spin and then verbalized the picture the spinner lands on. This works great for working on turn-taking, you and the child each get turns to spin. If the child has difficulty with /s clusters/, don't miss the opportunity to produce the word, "spin"! Have fun!

So why am I posting a picture of flavored chopsticks? Over the years I have seen many "aversive treatment"plans written for kiddos who struggle with behavioral outbursts, as well panicked parents trying to re-direct a public meltdown of their child. Try this simple strategy, using a highly scented Chapstick, uncap and waive slowly under the child's nostrils. In most instances, the outburst stops without seconds, without the use of words, or "hands on" management. Then "grab the silence" to talk to or redirect the child. There are brain explanations for this, but simply try it on yourself, try to yell and smell at the same time; it can't be done! Have fun!

A Wyoming winter. make up you own game for phrases. Have your kids share a picture and then make up as many phrases about their picture as possible. You can then print them out and have kids needing work on fluency read and re-read to see if they can beat their own time! If you have a group of kids, have them swap photos and phrases and read each other's. This can be a great family game to support language and reading!
