๐น Tequila 101: More Than a Margarita
Tequila can only be produced in designated regions of Mexico, most famously Jalisco & must be made from Blue Weber Agave. Unlike many spirits made from grains or fruit, tequila begins with the heart of the agave plant called the piรฑa. After years of growing the agave is harvested, cooked to release its sugars, fermented & distilled.
A quick guide to what youโll see on the shelf:
๐ฟ Blanco
Unaged or only briefly rested. Bright, fresh agave flavors with citrus, pepper, herbs, and minerality.
๐ชต Reposado
โRestedโ in oak for at least 2 months, adding softer notes of vanilla, spice, and caramel while keeping plenty of agave character.
๐ฅ Aรฑejo
Aged at least 1 year in oak, creating a richer, rounder tequila with deeper baking spice, vanilla, toasted wood, and dried-fruit notes.
One producer worth getting to know is Cazcabel. Made in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico ๐ฒ๐ฝ Cazcabel builds its tequilas around Blue Weber Agave and offers both traditional tequila expressions and flavored bottlings. The brand takes its name from the legendary Mexican curandero Don Cazcabel, whose story inspired its focus on agave and Mexican tradition.
Whether youโre pouring it neat, building a Paloma, or mixing up a pitcher of margaritas, knowing whatโs in the bottle makes tequila that much more interesting.
