Looking at our current out of pocket for the year to date ( and we haven't even bought our loads of hay yet or paid to have our own fields cut), it's easy to see why animals have to have a certain price point. We get a lot of " oh, that's too much" or " what's the lowest you can go". Well, Looking at everything we put into them, our prices are pretty darn close to our bottom dollar.
Every year when we do our books for taxes, we do NOT make a profit on our goats. Are we looking for ways to improve on that? Yes, definitely. But as it sits, and this isn't even taking into account our time, what we price them at is overly fair for what we put into them.
If you are looking for bargain bin, by all means go to the sale. Just beware that the sale barn is a game of Russian Roulette. Animals are sent there for many reasons, some just to quickly cut numbers, but others because they have issues. And those potential issues could completely destroy an otherwise healthy herd.
So what are you paying for from a private and well maintained herd? You are paying for years of selective breeding, years of that herd being grown with selective purchases to improve, years of vaccines and supplements to maintain parasite control and prevent dangerous bacteria, years of buying the best hay and minerals and growth feed. Times of heartbreak when your favorite doe doesn't make it through kidding, heartbreak when even the best care can't prevent a hard case of pneumonia. A lot of time, the price being asked doesn't even cover all that's put into them.
So when you are out there asking prices of registered animals with a pedigree full of show titles and milk records from a breeder that has put their lives into their livestock and the price is above your budget, a simple, " ok thank you, I was looking for something in a certain range to start out" is way more polite than, " oh my God are your animals trained to crap gold or are you crazy?" And yes, that particular gem of a comment was used towards us just this morning on a bottle doeling with a very fair number attached to her.
