Growing up, I was called a slob.
Not just once, regularly enough that it became part of how I saw myself.
My parents kept an immaculate house. My sister took after them. Everything in its place. Nothing out of order.
And then there was me.
I didn't know at the time that being called a slob wasn't just a description of my room. It was becoming a story I carried about who I was. What kind of person I was. What I was capable of.
Mess followed me into adulthood. Not because I loved it. Because the identity said: this is you. This is just how you are.
Wasted time searching for car keys. Debit cards believed lost were forgotten in pockets.
I tried cleaning days. Deep cleans before company came. Systems that worked for two weeks and later fell apart.
And then I decided to pick up three things at a time. That was it.
No cleaning day. No system. No overwhelm.
Just: every time I walk into a room, I pick up three things.
Now my house is the cleanest it has been in my adult life. Not from discipline. From a rep that was practicing a different identity one small action at a time.
I am someone who organizes effortlessly.
I read that line every morning. My house is starting to agree.
