The truth we’re about to share goes against the grain, but it is the truth:
Yolk color does not determine how healthy an egg is.
Surprised? Most people are. We’ve all been led to believe that a darker, more orange yolk automatically means a better, healthier egg. But that’s simply not accurate.
What actually determines yolk color is the hen’s diet. Hens that eat more foods rich in carotenoids—found mainly in grass and leafy greens—will naturally lay eggs with deeper orange yolks. On pasture, some chickens love grazing on grass, while others prefer hunting for bugs. So even within the same flock, yolk color can vary depending on each hen’s personal preference.
The real measure of egg quality isn’t yolk color—it’s how the chickens are raised and what they’re fed.
The gold standard is organically fed, soy‑free, corn‑free, pasture‑raised hens with plenty of space to roam on real farmland.
Happy, well‑fed chickens make truly healthy eggs.
