Why Isn’t My Water Softener Using Salt?

Last week, we talked about checking your salt level…
But what if your system is not using salt at all?

👉 There is a good chance you have something called a salt bridge.

🔍 What Is a Salt Bridge?

A salt bridge is a hard crust that forms inside your brine tank.
It creates a gap between the salt and the water—so the salt is not dissolving like it should.

👉 That means your softener is not getting what it needs to do its job.

⚠️ Signs You Might Have One:
Your tank looks full, but your water feels hard
You are not going through much salt
Spots or buildup are starting to come back

🛠️ How to Fix It it DYI:
Take a broom handle or similar tool
Gently push down through the salt to break up the crust
Do not force it—just break it apart

👉 Once it is broken up, your system can start working properly again.

💡 Pro Tip:
Do not just look at your tank—lightly press down on the salt occasionally to make sure it is not hardened underneath.

💧 TIP: How To Know When to Add Salt to Your Water Softener.
Your water softener cannot do its job without enough salt, so keeping an eye on it is key.

👉 Here is the simple rule:
Your salt level should ALWAYS be higher than the water level inside the brine tank.

⚠️ Bonus Tip:
If your tank looks full but your water still feels hard, you might have a salt bridge (a hard crust that blocks the salt from dissolving).

💡 Pro Tip:
Check your salt about once a month. It takes about 30 seconds and can save you from hard water problems sneaking back in.
