βοΈHappy St. Patrick's Day and Happy Birthday to my daughter Aimee and Happy 19th Birthday to Shamrock our oldest ever goat! βοΈ
Howdy friends,
Here's a cherished old note from Dad about my Irish grandparents I thought I'd share along with the painting. (They both immigrated in the early 1900's then met and married).βοΈ "Your grandparents were both from County Cork (there is also a Cork City) (The Titanic left from Cork City on it's last voyage). My mother's older sister Bertha Sullivan was booked on it for the return from a visit to Ireland but the ship was overbooked and she was bumped off. Everyone in the US thought she had been lost for several weeks until mail could come on another ship to tell the story. Your grandfather was from "Ballyvoig, Cahirdahy, Kilnamartyra, Co. Cork" Choke on that! The actual nearest town is Kilnamartya. I don't know about the other places, probably just a rural area or road names. The nearest large city is Macroom. The farm is still in the family. My first cousin Joan & her husband Johnny still live in the old house and one of her sons has built a house on the property. Joan is the only child of my father's youngest brother. The old Irish tradition was for property to pass to the youngest - probably to insure care for the older parents. Your grandmother was from "Glengarrif, Co. Cork" on Bantry Bay. The home place was sold some years ago. I have a small picture of the house painted by my first cousin Sister Eileen during one of her visits. If you would like, I'll send it to you. Give you a touch of the "old country". By Irish standards, both families were well off (but they certainly didn't think so) because they actually owned their few acres. Most people were sharecroppers or rented in town."
Love to all. Grandpa.
