Let’s talk CONFORMATION! 🐮

When purchasing cattle sight unseen, conformation matters more than ever. Nowadays, a large percentage of cattle are being purchased based solely on photos and videos, so knowing what to look for can help you make a much better buying decision.

A pretty picture doesn’t always tell the whole story!

Over the next few examples, we’ll point out some things you should learn to recognize before buying cattle from a picture or video.

FYI: these are our pictures of cattle we bought and/or raised . We would never use someone else’s picture to illustrate a negative trait! ☺️

We recently palpated over 20 cows—and every single one was confirmed bred.

But here’s the part we’re most proud of:

Every one of those cows bred back BEFORE her calf was weaned.

Think about what we’re asking that cow to do. She has to maintain herself, produce milk, raise a healthy calf, cycle back and successfully conceive again—all at the same time. That takes more than good genetics.
We put a lot of emphasis on quality pasture and a consistent, quality mineral program year-round. Not just during breeding season. Not just when cows look like they need it. Year-round.

You can buy some of the best genetics money can buy, but put those cattle on poor-quality pasture with a poor mineral program and eventually you’ll watch that genetic potential disappear. We don’t just want cows that look good. We want cows that breed back, raise a good calf, maintain themselves and do it again year after year.

Because at the end of the day, a cow has a job to do.

For someone raising Miniature Herefords, temperament should be one of the top selection criteria, especially if you’re selling cattle to families, youth exhibitors, or 4-H members. A bull with an exceptional disposition is valuable because he’ll influence many more calves than any individual cow.
