There is really not a lot of exciting news while you are waiting for trees to grow and produce. However, there is a learning curve to any new enterprise. Our efforts to grow saplings from nuts have been dismal. Soil samples from nursery pots have revealed sodium at toxic levels for pecan trees. Further testing identify the source is our public water supply. The sodium level is high enough to be a problem for people who need a low sodium diet. Sadly, the public water supply is not testing for this. We are looking at reverse osmosis filtration or going to rain water for our future water source.

Before and after pruning. You can see it better if you enlarge the trunk. The goal is to have a solid trunk as high as we can reach with our hand while standing on the ground. This gives the shaker enough room to grab the trunk and it allows air flow under the canopy to deter fungal growth.

2019 harvest reaped a total 8400 pounds. For comparison, 2017 total was 5600 and 2018 was 2700 pounds. From those figures, it is easy to recognize the alternate bearing issue that is naturally present in pecan trees.

While quantity was up, quality varied greatly. Lack of rain and extreme heat in late summer and through the fall resulted in poor kernel development. Prices this year varied as a result. Native nuts saw prices from $0.50 to $0.90 per pound. Elliott nuts got as high as $1.25 on the market. Other hybrid varieties were often graded by buyers. Usually they brought low native price or in some cases, the buyer rejected the nuts because the quality was so poor. Buyers desire 40% or higher kernel yield. They calculate that LA natives will render around 30%. Prices reflect this.

Our farm has planted between 2013 and 2019 approximately 750 trees. None of these are producing yet. We are still growing trees, learning how to control grass and weeds on 50 acres with approximately 1500 lawn mower obstacles. However, God is good and progress is being made. Apologies for rare posts but this is slow work.

The smaller teardrop pecan is from a 50-year-old Elliot tree. The larger pecan is from a 5-year-old Creek tree. The Creek variety is known to be an early producer, though after around 20 years it tends to become an over-producer which will lower its actual kernel production. Today the process began to rejuvenate the McCormick Orchard located between Bunkie and Evergreen. The first step is to clear the orchard floor. Poison ivy vines completely cover the bark of these tree trunks and must be removed.
