Ready for Laser Treatments!!

Scotch had a bit of a rough day at Cornell today but better than expected results.

A couple months ago we noticed a “cut” on her v***a. This actually happens more than you’d think when horses itch themselves on bushes or get kicked by other horses. Luckily the one things v***as are VERY GOOD at is healing.

However, when the sheath and v***a cleaner was here in April it still hadn’t healed and it looked really raw and wrong.

So vets were called, biopsies were done and after lab reports came in it looked like squamous cell cancer mass. So we got an appointment at Cornell and got the ball rolling.

Today they were able to de-bulk most of the mass but with the margins so close to the sphincter muscles caution had to be used. We were really unsure how well we would be able to remove it but once removed all of the veterinarians felt it was a better removal than expected.

Afterwards it was treated with a photo laser treatment - photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses a combination of photosensitizing medications and specific light wavelengths (from lasers or LEDs) to destroy cancer cells. It is highly effective for superficial cancers and precancerous growths.

We head back in two weeks but feel very optimistic.

The good news is that there’s absolutely no signs of any systemic issues - for a 22 year old mare she’s looking, moving and acting phenomenally. The treatments will help support her and she should recover from the standing surgery well.

We’ll just have to keep a nice close eye on her and she will have lots of check ups to monitor her ongoing!

Scotch is a horse that owes us nothing - at 22 years old this was her first ever visit to Cornell in the 19 years she’s been with us. She’s probably taught nearly 20,000 lessons, trail rides and pony rides.

Needless to say, she’s earned some deep pockets for treatment and we will figure out where to get the money from even if it is out of the personal piggy bank.

Why are riding lessons important? Why is practice important? Why is volunteering and working in the barn important? Why is groundwork important?

So that you can do this.

Learning riding skills, increasing your Rolodex of past experiences, understanding how horses think, knowing how to read your horse and know what they need, having the capability to lead the way and ride independently, being calm enough to be able to communicate to others and advocate for your horse, being able to directly respond to the needs of others,

…. and doing it at a hand gallop on an open road.

This is what it looks like when you put it all together. Unfiltered and unedited.

A group of us went to Otter Creek together where everyone took part in the care of the horses, we rotated turns in leading and following, we worked together while also riding our own rides, and we communicated the needs of our own horses while also looking out for the other horses.

This is the point of everything we do back at the barn all put together.

Rhysand and his best mate, Spock

They may be named after the very different fictional characters, but this nearly-yearling and senior mule are two peas in a pod. They are fabulous playmates for one another.

Spock may not be riding anymore but he is a fantastic babysitter and really shows the young horses the ropes.
