Did you know your facility's water systems could be a hidden breeding ground for Legionella?

Legionella multiplies fastest between 77°F and 113°F (25–45°C) — and that range is an everyday reality in cooling towers, decorative fountains, and large hot water systems. Water sitting in that zone without a defined control plan is how a manageable risk turns into a reportable case or a shutdown.

Staying ahead of it takes more than spot-checking temperatures:
- Consistent, data-driven water quality monitoring
- Automated biocide dosing that stays ahead of bacterial growth
- A Water Management Program aligned with ASHRAE Standard 188

We don't just supply chemicals — we engineer the complete program that keeps your systems efficient, your facility compliant, and your people safe.

For 120 years, precision has been at the heart of what we do — and our lab is the proof.

Garratt-Callahan was founded in 1904 in Seattle as a modest wet-chemistry lab. Decades of investment led to a major expansion in the late 1980s and our first formal certification by 1990. Today, our Burlingame, California lab is accredited by the California Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP).

That accreditation stands behind every result we hand a client — the data you put in front of regulators, the analysis that guides your treatment program, the accuracy your team relies on. For 120 years, our in-house lab has been the backbone of that work.

Safer water treatment doesn't have to be complicated, and with solid chemical technology, it isn't.

Garratt-Callahan's Controlled Release formulas deliver proven scale, deposit, and corrosion protection for open recirculating cooling systems in a concentrated solid pellet form. No pumps. No drums. No moving parts. Just consistent, reliable treatment over a full 30-day cycle. These solutions are already trusted across hospitals, schools, data centers, grocery refrigeration, property management, and municipalities.

The benefits go beyond convenience. Solid chemistry means reduced human exposure to hazardous liquids, a greener environmental footprint, lower energy usage, and simplified storage and handling. If your cooling system is under 500 tons, this is a transition worth making.

The safety risks of HF descaling were once worth the trade-off — they aren't anymore.

Hydrofluoric acid and ammonium bifluoride are still widely used for industrial descaling. Both are classified as health hazards by the NIH. The documented long-term effects include chemical burns, bone loss, chronic lung disease, and blindness. These aren't theoretical risks. They're trade-offs operators have been quietly accepting because the alternatives didn't perform as well on stubborn silica and silicate scale.

That's no longer true. Garratt-Callahan Formula 9420 was developed specifically as a safer-chemistry replacement. It's EPA-recognized, validated in the field, and built for the same applications HF and ammonium bifluoride have historically handled. Comparable cleaning performance. Without the worker-safety exposure.

For any team still running HF-based descaling protocols, this is worth a closer look. Safety isn't an option anymore. It's the standard.

Meet Our Team: A quarter century of keeping G-C running behind the scenes.

Some of the most important work at any company happens in the background, where it's easy to overlook until something goes wrong. For 25 years, Ryan Benner has been the reason that almost never happens at Garratt-Callahan.

As IT Manager, Ryan has built and maintained the technology backbone that keeps the company connected — from network communications to disaster recovery planning. He was also one of the architects of our digital water management system, which changed how our field teams capture and share data day to day.

A quarter century is a long time to commit to one place, and Ryan has spent his time making sure everyone else's work runs smoothly. We're lucky to have him.

Congratulations, Ryan — and thank you.

Today, we remember and honor those who gave all.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and commitment to something greater than themselves continue to inspire us every day.

At Garratt-Callahan we are especially proud to work alongside team members who have served in the military and who continue to bring leadership, integrity, and a strong sense of purpose to everything they do. We extend our gratitude to all who have served and to the families who support them.

The science behind a water treatment program is what determines whether it works.

Treatment programs designed on generic assumptions tend to miss what's specific to a given system. Two facilities running similar equipment on the same municipal water supply can develop completely different deposit chemistries based on operating conditions, equipment age, and seasonal patterns. A program built on averages will underperform in both.

Rigorous analysis changes the equation. Trace-metal analysis, corrosion-coupon evaluation, XRD deposit identification, and microbial testing are the inputs that determine whether a treatment program addresses what's actually happening in a system or just looks reasonable on paper.

Our ELAP-accredited laboratory is staffed by research-driven scientists who work directly with our field technicians and engineers through every step of the process — from initial system assessment to post-treatment reassessment. With more than a century of water treatment expertise, the lab is also where our ongoing research and development take place. The science is what makes a tailored program possible.

Why your spring cooling tower startup needs a cleanout step before anything else.

Every spring, our team sees the same scenario in the field: a cooling tower emerges from winter layup, carrying months of corrosion byproducts, mineral scale, and biological growth that have built up quietly during storage. Whether the system was wet or dry layup, those conditions are almost guaranteed to have initiated deposit and microbial activity. Before you simply fire the system back up, that accumulated debris needs to be mobilized and flushed out first. Skipping this step doesn't just reduce efficiency from day one; it sets the stage for bigger corrosion and biological control problems all season long.

Here's what we recommend for a proper spring startup: dose Formula 9020 alongside your corrosion inhibitor to mobilize and suspend deposits, allowing them to be effectively flushed from the system. Once the cleanout is complete, follow with an oxidizing or non-oxidizing biocide to knock out any biological growth that wintered over in the tower. From there, transition into your regular maintenance program. A clean start keeps the whole cooling season running smoothly.

When closed-loop iron levels missed spec, more filtration wasn't fixing the problem.

In high-performance environments like data centers, even small deviations in water quality can have outsized consequences. In a recent case, a facility was unable to bring closed-loop iron levels within manufacturer specifications despite increased filtration — putting both system reliability and equipment warranty coverage at risk.

The issue wasn't filtration capacity. It was that the treatment strategy was addressing symptoms rather than the underlying chemistry. When that gap goes unaddressed, performance stalls and risk continues to climb, regardless of how much filtration is in place.

For operators managing critical infrastructure, getting water chemistry right from the start — and maintaining visibility into system conditions afterward — is what protects uptime and long-term asset value.
