The water moving through your building is your responsibility — and the stakes climb faster than most maintenance schedules anticipate. Legionella, waterborne pathogens, and aging infrastructure don't wait for a convenient time.

Garratt-Callahan's Building Water Safety consulting helps you assess risk, develop a customized Water Management Program, and implement it step by step. Our team holds ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI 12080-2020 certification, and our programs meet ASHRAE 188-2018 and CMS mandates. From flushing and disinfection protocols to multi-barrier Legionella control, we manage the full process so nothing falls through the cracks.

We serve commercial properties, healthcare, hospitality, food & beverage, government, and manufacturing — because safe water isn't industry-specific. It's non-negotiable.

In food and beverage, a water problem isn't a maintenance ticket — it's a recall risk.

Every sanitation, water treatment, and process decision ties directly to product quality, compliance, and consumer safety. That's why Garratt-Callahan goes beyond supplying chemicals: we help facilities operate with confidence through industry-specific expertise, accredited testing, and compliance-focused programs built for demanding production environments.

The credentials behind that work:
- California Environmental Laboratory Accreditation ( #1226) for accurate, reliable water quality testing
- Halal Certification to meet global and specialty market requirements
- Support for FDA Ingredient Compliance, BRC, SQF, and HACCP frameworks

From dairies and breweries to meat processing, produce washing, and CIP operations, our programs are built around modern food production — helping you maintain safe operations, protect product quality, and stay audit-ready.

Notes from the field: the wastewater issues we hear about almost never start as emergencies. They start as rising surcharges, recurring odor complaints, inconsistent discharge results, scaling, fouled equipment, and creeping maintenance hours that chip away at efficiency.

That's why effective wastewater treatment has to go beyond "meeting permit." Each person at the table needs something different:
- Facilities managers need less downtime and fewer maintenance headaches
- Compliance teams need confidence in discharge consistency and reporting
- Procurement needs programs that lower total operating costs instead of triggering reactive spend

We work alongside our customers to build programs tailored to the realities of their operations — chemistry selection, feed systems, monitoring, service, and ongoing optimization.

The best wastewater programs prevent problems before they become violations, shutdowns, or budget surprises.

A high-rise casino resort was spending $6,000 a month on grease trap pumping alone. We brought it down to $1,500.

The property was stuck in a cycle of daily manual drain-line cleaning and persistent odor complaints, with no end in sight. Garratt-Callahan introduced a bioaugmentation program — beneficial bacteria that break down the organic buildup behind clogs, grease trap overflow, and odor-causing gases like hydrogen sulfide.

The results:
- Pumping costs down 75%
- Daily manual maintenance eliminated
- Odors gone within 24 hours

If you're running a hotel, casino, or high-occupancy property, fighting the same battle — it's solvable.

If your wastewater system feels unstable — climbing sludge costs, your team spending more time troubleshooting than operating — it's time to reassess.

We help industrial facilities bring wastewater performance back under control with programs built for real operating conditions, not lab ideals.

That means addressing the full picture:
- Clarification and solid-liquid separation
- Dewatering
- Sludge volume reduction and biological system performance

Each one of these is backed by our ELAP-accredited lab and decades of hands-on expertise.

We don't swap one chemical for another and hope for the best. We build a program around your system and your goals.

Wastewater problems rarely start as failures. They start as small performance swings that quietly drive up cost and risk. The good news: stable, measurable results are achievable.

Did you know your facility's water systems could be a hidden breeding ground for Legionella?

Legionella multiplies fastest between 77°F and 113°F (25–45°C) — and that range is an everyday reality in cooling towers, decorative fountains, and large hot water systems. Water sitting in that zone without a defined control plan is how a manageable risk turns into a reportable case or a shutdown.

Staying ahead of it takes more than spot-checking temperatures:
- Consistent, data-driven water quality monitoring
- Automated biocide dosing that stays ahead of bacterial growth
- A Water Management Program aligned with ASHRAE Standard 188

We don't just supply chemicals — we engineer the complete program that keeps your systems efficient, your facility compliant, and your people safe.

For 120 years, precision has been at the heart of what we do — and our lab is the proof.

Garratt-Callahan was founded in 1904 in Seattle as a modest wet-chemistry lab. Decades of investment led to a major expansion in the late 1980s and our first formal certification by 1990. Today, our Burlingame, California lab is accredited by the California Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (ELAP).

That accreditation stands behind every result we hand a client — the data you put in front of regulators, the analysis that guides your treatment program, the accuracy your team relies on. For 120 years, our in-house lab has been the backbone of that work.

Safer water treatment doesn't have to be complicated, and with solid chemical technology, it isn't.

Garratt-Callahan's Controlled Release formulas deliver proven scale, deposit, and corrosion protection for open recirculating cooling systems in a concentrated solid pellet form. No pumps. No drums. No moving parts. Just consistent, reliable treatment over a full 30-day cycle. These solutions are already trusted across hospitals, schools, data centers, grocery refrigeration, property management, and municipalities.

The benefits go beyond convenience. Solid chemistry means reduced human exposure to hazardous liquids, a greener environmental footprint, lower energy usage, and simplified storage and handling. If your cooling system is under 500 tons, this is a transition worth making.

The safety risks of HF descaling were once worth the trade-off — they aren't anymore.

Hydrofluoric acid and ammonium bifluoride are still widely used for industrial descaling. Both are classified as health hazards by the NIH. The documented long-term effects include chemical burns, bone loss, chronic lung disease, and blindness. These aren't theoretical risks. They're trade-offs operators have been quietly accepting because the alternatives didn't perform as well on stubborn silica and silicate scale.

That's no longer true. Garratt-Callahan Formula 9420 was developed specifically as a safer-chemistry replacement. It's EPA-recognized, validated in the field, and built for the same applications HF and ammonium bifluoride have historically handled. Comparable cleaning performance. Without the worker-safety exposure.

For any team still running HF-based descaling protocols, this is worth a closer look. Safety isn't an option anymore. It's the standard.
