Yesterday, my bestie came out to help me install hives for a few packages of bees. This was her first time working with bees and she did great! I’m not a teacher by any means but Kally was so kind to let me bumble my way through explaining the process. I’m so glad we got to share this lovely experience together. 🫶🏻🐝

Our ladies 🐓 are laying like they have been happily spoiled with kitchen scraps, fodder, and meal worms all winter long.

First day of LGD job training and Atticus did great. 🤠

Getting a Livestock Guardian Dog as a puppy along with 60 newly hatched chicks from at the same time has been a little stressful but things are finally starting to feel like our animals understand our daily routine. Thank freaking goodness! 🤪

This big boy will start puppy classes soon and I’m pretty sure he’s going to be the biggest pup in class. Please stay tuned.

After a two year hiatus, we were honored to host St. Philip’s Junior/Senior prom last weekend.

These kids not only danced the night away but they also volunteered and helped us clean out the entire barn beforehand. We can’t say enough good things about the St Phil students, staff, and parents who gave their time to help us make this prom happen. We hope they’ll consider having other events out here in the future.

While we are still working on the interior of the barn, if you’re looking for an event space for 2025, please send us a message or email us [email protected]. We would love to host your special occasion!
(We are located 20 minutes South of Marshall and about 25 minutes from Battle Creek and Coldwater.)

We also want to thank our friends, Mike, who did the electricity and hung the chandeliers, along with Charlie, Adam, and Trent, who planed our old oak boards and created this beautiful wall.

We’ve had a lot happening on the farm over the past few weeks but we are excited to introduce our newest baby, Atticus!

He is a 16 week old mix-breed livestock guardian dog (Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepard, and Akbash), named after one of our favorite literary characters. Atticus recently had his first vet visit and weighs 53 #!

We don’t usually search out for dogs (they all have a way of finding us in different ways or walking up to our farm) but this guy is special. We lost all our chickens last summer to a family of foxes. After a lot of research and talking with people, we agreed a LGD would be a great addition to our farm. Atticus comes from a sweet family in Gobles, MI who had an accidental litter. His dad was 170 # and the mom was 120 #. Atticus and his siblings were very well taken care of and we are excited to have this big guy out here on the farm.

He is smart, loyal, and stays by our side during walks around the pasture and pretty much everywhere we go. After three weeks of Atticus living with us, he is House-trained, knows his name and how to sit and lay down. He’s the floppiest, biggest baby and it’s fun to watch him play with all our other dogs. He’s fitting in great with everyone. He truly is a good boy and hears it from us constantly.

Welcome to Farmlandia, Atticus! May you grow up to be the best livestock guardian dog our chickens and cows (and future animals) ever know.

🐝THE HIVES ARE ALIVE!!!🙌🏼

We experienced a beautiful day with temperatures in the high fifties yesterday so I anxiously went to check on our girls. I was so happy to see them flying and being active. I know we aren’t out of Winter yet but this makes me feel so good about taking care of bees. Every year I have failures and learn from them. It’s incredibly hard when hives die but here’s the proof that if you truly enjoy something, you have to allow yourself the grace and humility of failure, stick with it so then you can begin to dive deeper into your craft. 💛

Pictures are from three hives; two on our property and the third on Dave’s daughter’s property. The unwrapped hive was my first swarm I caught last summer and I learned so much from that wild hive. I was honestly shocked to find them thriving. They must’ve re-queened and swarmed on me several times last summer but then I got busy with school starting in the Fall, I just had to let it play itself out.

I gave each hive supplemental feed to help them until Spring; the time when those beautiful dandelions bloom. 🌼
