We haven’t talked much about the newest additions to the flock yet…arrived a few days ago!

Truth be told, these girls are more of a pet flock than anything else. These hens will be my happy place and Ron has really missed spending time with the birds, and after losing so many of our older flock over the years, it felt like the right time to add a few feathered friends back into the mix.

These little fluff balls are a combination of Cochins and White Orpingtons—chosen for their sweet personalities, beautiful feathers, fluffy feet and traditionally wonderful backyard companions.

And before anyone asks… no roosters here, only queens. 👑

Will they lay eggs? Absolutely but not on a production scale like the laying flock. But for now they’re just tiny puffballs exploring their brooder, growing a little bigger every day.

Sometimes not everything on a homestead has to earn its keep. Sometimes it’s enough that it brings a little joy 🤩

BTW look 👀 at that little lavender lady giving me the stink eye haha 🤣

🥚 Farm Fresh Eggs — Now $5 per dozen

As egg prices have stabilized, we’ve reduced our price to remain competitive with our fellow local farmers while continuing to provide fresh eggs collected right here on the farm.

👉One thing we hear all the time is, “I didn’t realize you were so close!” Serenity Hill Homestead is located just a few miles from downtown Burlington, just minutes from Highway 120, and offers easy access right off Highway DD. Picking up fresh pork and eggs is quick, convenient, and a great way to support a local family farm.

Whether you’re stocking the freezer, planning a cookout, or simply need dinner for the week, we’d love to help.

Send us a message to check availability or put together an order. As always, thank you for supporting our small family farm. We truly appreciate every order, whether it’s a dozen eggs, a package of bacon, or a freezer full of pork. ❤️

Treasures.

I recommend filling your space, your life, your home, and your gardens with treasures.

A chipped enamel mug that once belonged to someone you’ve never forgotten, an old watering can that no longer holds water but still holds memories, that trinket picked up at a flea market because it simply made you smile.

To some people, they’re just old things. Clutter. Junk. To me they are what makes our house our home 🏠

These little objects fill the gaps of life. They remind us of people we’ve loved, places we’ve been, seasons we’ve lived through, and moments that would otherwise fade with time.

I love that every treasure has a story. Every scratch, chip, stain, and worn edge is evidence that it was used, appreciated, and part of someone’s journey.

As we cleaned the garden beds this spring, I unearthed an old enamel mug that had spent the winter buried beneath leaves and soil. To most, it would look like a rusty old cup. To me, it carries memories from my hospice nursing days, a family I’ll never forget, a cherished gift and now another season in the garden on the farm and how much we have really brought to life our dreams.

Friends just like this cup…our edges get tattered, rusted and run down and at some point we too will be a become a memory.

Fill your life with that which brings joy…Fill your life with treasures. I bet you’ll find that the things others called junk were often the very things that brought the most joy and kept the memories alive. ❤️

You can call us a lot of things, but you can’t call us lazy. You can’t call us highfalutin, too good for anybody, or afraid of hard work.

What you can call us is frugal in the right places, determined, and resourceful.

This morning’s project before heading off to the 9-to-5 was moving pig huts into the back paddock. We don’t own a tractor. Yep, we’re a farm without a tractor. Not because we wouldn’t love one, but because I’d rather spend money on animals, fencing, feed, and improvements than on another monthly payment.

Would I love a shiny John Deere tractor or Kubota subcompact? Absolutely. A Gator to save some steps back and forth across the farm? Dreamy 🤗 That would be nice too.

But for now, this old Craftsman mower is our workhorse. I’ve said it a hundred times and I’ll say it again—it was one of the best things left behind when we bought this property. We finally took the mower deck off last year, and ever since then it’s been hauling feed, pulling trailers, moving supplies, and apparently towing pig huts 💪

Add in the little utility trailer we bought this spring—the same one somebody backed into because it’s so small they couldn’t see it—and you’ve got yourself a farm fleet!!

A little muscle. A little ingenuity. A whole lot of determination.

Sometimes you don’t get the job done with what you wish you had. You get the job done with what you’ve got.

And around here, that’s usually enough 👍

P.S. If any followers have deep pockets and excess money lying around and would like to sponsor Serenity Hill Homestead’s tractor fund, we won’t stand in your way. 😉🚜😂

Going cowgirl 🤠 again…

I think Wisconsin is having a identity crisis… Yesterday as we were doing chores and working in the yard and the humidity was astronomically unbearable…🥵 I have a feeling that this summer is going to be as sticky as last…

Nonetheless…forward friends is the only option so we are making baby step progress in the gardens. One benefit of all this moisture, the weeds are much easier to pull but…they easily grow as fast 🤷‍♀️

I’m planning of bottle gourds, jack be littles, maybe a few winter squash.

Happy gardening 👩🏼‍🌾 Stay hydrated. Stay motivated. Stay You ♥️

It’s time to mix up our summer bug deterrent.

Now, let’s be clear—👉this is not an insect repellent, and I’m certainly not making any claims that it will prevent bites or keep every pest away. What it is, however, is a simple blend that we’ve found helpful while working in the garden, tending animals, pulling weeds, or enjoying an evening on the porch.

Our mixture uses witch hazel, apple cider vinegar, distilled water, and a combination of essential oils including eucalyptus, lemongrass, bergamot, and cedarwood. The scent is fresh, earthy, and pleasant, and when reapplied every couple of hours it seems to make us a little less appealing to some of those pesky gnats, garden flies, mosquitoes, and other summertime nuisances 😊

Most often we spray it on our hats, clothing, and around the outside of our work shirts before heading to the barn, garden, or orchard. I’ll also do a light mist across my shoulders and upper back since that’s where the flies seem to bother me the most while working outside.

Is it perfect? No.

Will it replace long sleeves, common sense, or EPA-approved insect repellents in high-bug areas? Absolutely not 🚨

But for everyday farm chores, gardening, watering flowers, and evening walks around the property, it’s become part of our summer routine. It’s simple, inexpensive, and easy to keep on hand during the busiest months of the year.

👉As with any product containing essential oils, everyone should be mindful of their own sensitivities and skin reactions and use what works best for them.

Sometimes the old-fashioned ways aren’t about perfection—they’re about making life outdoors just a little more enjoyable.

I will make sure to post both recipes in the comment section.
