🤪 Unpopular opinion of the day: NPIP edition.

I don’t think being NPIP carries quite as much weight as people sometimes give it.

Don’t come for me — I’m NPIP too. 😂

NPIP testing is absolutely valuable and tests for specific diseases that matter. BUT being NPIP does not mean someone has a completely disease-free flock.

There are other contagious illnesses — especially respiratory diseases like Mycoplasma — that can get into a flock, spread bird to bird, and potentially leave birds as carriers even when they look perfectly healthy. And those aren’t automatically ruled out just because someone says, “My flock is NPIP.”

Personally, when I’m buying birds, I care just as much (if not more 👀) about the breeder’s actual flock health, biosecurity practices, history of respiratory illness, and how they handle sick birds.

NPIP = an important piece of information.

NPIP ≠ a magical certificate saying every bird in the flock is healthy and disease-free. 🤪

Am I the only one who thinks people put a little too much weight on those four letters?

Happy Monday from this 🔥 little couple! 🤎

This handsome guy finally got some ladies of his own, and I cannot WAIT to hatch some babies from this pairing! 😍

He’s mauve splash, and she’s, of course, a delicious lil piece of 🍫. I’m already obsessed with the possibilities! 🐣🤎

Can we stop acting like “pet quality” is an insult? 😂

Some of y’all hear “pet quality” and react like somebody just called your chicken an ugly little bridge troll. 🤣

Meanwhile, if we’re being real, the majority of my own flock is probably pet quality. And I absolutely adore them.

Pet quality does NOT mean ugly.
It does NOT mean unhealthy.
It does NOT mean worthless.

It simply means that bird has traits that make it less ideal for showing or breeding toward a particular standard.

A chicken can be absolutely GORGEOUS and still be pet quality. It may have something about its type, structure, comb, toes, wings, coloring, etc. that keeps it from being considered show or breeding quality.

And that’s okay.

Not every chicken needs to be bred. Not every chicken needs to win a ribbon. And not every chicken needs to come from some fancy bloodline to have value.

Some of my absolute favorite birds are pet quality. They’re healthy, beautiful, have personalities I love, and I couldn’t care less if a judge would look at them and clutch their pearls. 😂

“Pet quality” isn’t the bottom of some imaginary chicken hierarchy.

Sometimes a chicken’s greatest accomplishment in life is simply being a spoiled little backyard freeloader.

And frankly, that’s a pretty damn good gig. 🤣

Unpopular opinion: Chickens need to be able to chicken. 🤷‍♀️🐔

This may ruffle some feathers (see what I did there 😂), but this is something I feel pretty strongly about.

I don’t believe chickens should spend their entire lives inside a barn or building just because they’re being used for breeding. (I’m certainly not judging anyone that does)

I want mine outside. I want them scratching in the dirt, digging ridiculous holes to dust bathe in, chasing bugs, laying in the sunshine and just doing normal chicken things.

Obviously there are times they need to be kept inside because of weather, illness, quarantine, safety, etc. That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about birds whose entire lives are spent inside because that’s how the breeding operation is set up.

And honestly, this is one of the reasons I will never have a large breeding operation.

I only have so much space to provide separate breeding pens where everyone can have a safe indoor area and their own outdoor space. When I run out of that space, I’m done adding pens. 😂

Could I fit more birds here if my only goal was producing more chicks? Sure.

But that’s not why I do this.

I do this for fun. I love my chickens. I love playing around with colors and genetics, hatching babies and seeing what I get. But producing more birds will never be more important to me than the quality of life of the birds I already have.

And especially with Silkies, I know outdoor space has to be done safely. They’re not exactly out there making brilliant survival decisions. 😂 They need protection from predators and somewhere dry and secure to get out of the weather.

But they still deserve sunshine. Fresh air. Dirt. Bugs. Grass. Dust baths.

I don’t want chickens that just exist in breeding pens. I want chickens that get to be chickens.
