Our little pasture guinea pig colony made their big debut yesterday!

Dressed in tiny princess hats and dresses, they spent the afternoon making everyone smile and got some serious adoration in return for their hard work at a capybara themed birthday party.

To be fair, they do look like miniature capybaras with fabulous fashion sense.

The residents have been working hard! Some children grow up surrounded by animals- like mine. Others may never have the opportunity to hold a rabbit, pet a sheep, or feed a goat, let alone see an Alpaca. That simple interaction can be more powerful than many people realize.

Animals teach lessons that cannot always be learned from a book. They teach patience when a shy animal needs time to trust. They teach responsibility through daily care and routine. They teach kindness, empathy, and compassion by showing children that every living thing depends on us for its well being.

For many kiddos, working with animals can build confidence, reduce anxiety, encourage communication, and create meaningful connections. There is something special about watching a child light up when a bunny settles into their lap or when a baby goat takes treats from their hand.

Whether they live on a farm or in the middle of a city, every child deserves the chance to experience the joy, wonder, and life lessons animals have to offer. The impact often lasts beyond the moment and helps shape kinder, more compassionate adults.

Animals may not speak our language, but they sure as heck have an incredible way of teaching what matters most.

As a professional, a mom of four, a 4H leader, and a volunteer, I hear “I’m busy” all the time.

With all due respect, so am I.

Between working full time, raising four kids, caring for a farm full of animals, volunteering, shuttling children to sports and activities, and trying to help develop the next generation of leaders, there simply are not enough hours in the day. But the truth is, most of us are busy.

Being busy isn’t unique. It’s the reality of modern life.

Before “I’m too busy” becomes the default response, take a moment to consider the person you’re saying it to. Chances are they are juggling just as much, in different ways. More importantly, consider what you committed to in the first place.

If you don’t have the time, it’s okay to say no. In fact, that’s often the most respectful answer. What isn’t respectful is committing to something and then treating it as optional when your schedule gets full.

Respect people’s time. Communicate. Follow through. And if circumstances change, be honest about it.

Being busy is understandable. Being considerate is a choice.

I wanted to scrub the dog snot off my windows, but realized I was out of cleaner. Google to the rescue! It truly was streak free. You’d never know three dogs slimed my front door.

You spend 45 minutes doing your hair, step outside for 30 seconds, and suddenly you’re looking exactly like this pig after a hose down.

The difference is that Marigold’s curls are natural, effortless, and adorable.
