‘Learned something new today when investigating the orange legs of our horses after riding through the orchards.

Check out Spirit’s orange legs, and Charlie’s were orange, too. Thankfully the color hosed off easily when we returned to the barn.

Our first concern was something chemical, but we realized the thick grass between and around the fruit trees had irregular amounts of the yellow/orange coating. Apparently the wet summer has not only spawned hoards of mosquitoes (the worst everrrr) but also “rust”(puccinia spp.).

“Cool nights with heavy dew and light, frequent rainfall add to the ideal conditions for rust to develop. Warm, cloudy, humid weather followed by hot, sunny weather also favors rust development on lawns. Occasionally, seasons with excess rain may have rust outbreaks due to depletion of available nitrogen.“ https://extension.illinois.edu/lawns/preventing-rust-diseases-home-lawns

Oataka is always worth the drive!

After riding our more familiar wooded trails, we thoroughly enjoyed the southern trails through varied terrain that included so many flowers, milkweed, birds, and small butterflies, as well as the “Grimms’ Fairytales”path. No biting flies, no humidity, just lovely fresh breezes. It. Was. Perfect.

And just as we finished our ride, we saw two young deer napping in the grass. We see lots of deer on the trails, but these two decided that the mowed area looked like a comfy place to chill.

Willow is keeping to herself as she isn’t feeling really great these days, but she is also being patient with Holly when she has to be.
