WOO-HOO and thank you to NCDOT NC 12

Dare County has announced a phased reentry plan for southbound traffic on NC12 between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe: Wednesday at 7 a.m., southbound traffic will only be allowed for Priority 1, 2, and 3 individuals, as well as for Ocracoke residents. No visitor access on Wednesday.

Then on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7 a.m., southbound traffic will be available to the general public, including visitors. At that point, all entry restrictions will be lifted. Details: https://bit.ly/4dZiHj1

Again, the area near the Pea Island Visitor Center will be a one-lane gravel road, with traffic control regulated by automated signals. Please drive slowly and with extreme caution through the area. There will be sand and water on the road, and our crews will be out in force making further repairs and re-establishing a protective dune line.

Thank you again for your continued patience as we work to recover from last week's powerful nor'easter.

We SO appreciate since the storm and road damage all the calls and messages, the guests who postponed rather than cancelled reservations, all the patience and support. Losing a week of September is a blow to the hardworking people of Hatteras Island still recovering from Hurricane Erin's losses this time last year.

Ask any local our favorite time of the year, the all but universal answer is "fall shoulder season". The best way to show your support for our community inside the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is to come share our favorite time of the year. Whether you stay and dine with us or any of our friends and neighbors from Rodanthe to Hatteras Village and Ocracoke, come see us in October and November. Discover why it is our favorite season and will be yours :-)

Thank you SO much NCDOT! Northbound Route 12 opens a day earlier than expected. Let's hope full access on a single lane with automated flag machines is restored quickly to permit guests back to our island home :-)

N.C. 12 on Pea Island to Reopen to Northbound Traffic Today Ahead of Schedule

The Outer Banks highway has been closed since a nor'easter damaged the road on Thursday

RODANTHE – The N.C. Department of Transportation will reopen one lane of N.C. 12 on Pea Island to northbound traffic at 3 p.m. today, a day earlier than Wednesday’s scheduled reopening.

A one-lane, gravel stretch of N.C. 12 will be reopened for northbound traffic first. As the northbound traffic congestion subsides, southbound traffic will be allowed along the road, with the alternating directions of one-way traffic controlled by an automatic flagger system. The current restrictions will remain in place even when southbound traffic reopens.

Dare County officials will announce when the southbound traffic will be allowed. There is not a timeline for when the road will reopen to southbound traffic.

Northbound traffic was already lined up overnight in anticipation of the road being reopened. So when the road reopens at 3 p.m., there will be heavy congestion. Drivers should be patient, pay attention and drive through the area with caution.

The highway has been closed from the Marc Basnight Bridge to Rodanthe since early Thursday morning when a 1,000-foot section of pavement near the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center was damaged by repeated ocean overwash during a powerful nor’easter.

NCDOT crews started building back the protective sand dune along N.C. 12 after tidal conditions subsided Sunday. The damaged asphalt and grading was also removed, and crews started laying down a mixture of aggregate and gravel to construct the one-lane road.

State transportation crews are working to reconstruct N.C. 12 in its two-lane, paved configuration, but do not have a timeline for when the road will be fully reopened to traffic. NCDOT will announce the full reopening of N.C. 12 in advance of its reopening.

Meanwhile, the emergency ferry route between Rodanthe and Stumpy Point will remain in operation on its 24-hour schedule until traffic congestion on Hatteras Island subsides and officials determine the emergency route is no longer required.

One of our regular guests sent a note a few days ago with a link to an article published on October 5th, 2016, almost exactly a decade in the past; "Here is the link (below) to Our State Magazine with an article about your Inn that was published around ten years ago...That is me and my wife having lunch on your porch."

As we deal with another multiday closure of Route 12, their lovely note and article reminded us that in some ways 2016 seems like yesterday, in other ways like an eternity in the past. It reminded us to be grateful for the guests who return to us, send their friends, post reviews, and have made us top ranked in all of our categories without paid advertising.

We are grateful to you, our guests. We are grateful to General Manager Natasha Quidley who built this with me, and F&B Director Meredith Harris who came along side us to make us what we are. We are grateful to our staff who stay with us years, multiples of industry averages, committed to develop as professionals to provide the lodging, culinary and event experiences that keep our guests coming back. We are grateful to our community who have embraced and supported us. We are grateful to the family we have built here who we love and honor in response to the love and honor they've given us.

Road closures are temporary. Gratitude and family have longevity. See you all soon :-)
