Every chimney should be swept, cleaned and inspected at least once a year no matter what type of heat is being used. I usually do this in the fall because I'm too busy in the spring planting the garden and this is not a chore I like to do during the summer.

An older post, but a good one.
Male ducks (aka drakes) literally sound like Donald Duck. There is a reason for that: Disney animators were (and are) very studious about studying the animals depicted in their films, even the anthropomorphic ones like Donald Duck.

S**t is a fancy word for animal 💩
The deer, turkeys, racoon, and various other critters roaming my back half are always looking for food. We share this tree in a sense as it has not been properly cultivated in quite some time and it is basically wild.
The original part of my home was built in 1850, so I figure this tree is 75ish years old, maybe more?
I'm no expert, but the google told me that apple trees typically live for 100 years or so.

The garden might be slowing down, but is still making good bites!
I think this weekend I will can the tomatoes and make okra pickles 😋
I am also letting some plants completely mature so I can save the seeds for next year 👍

Okra grows well in southern Maine with minimal pests (just the Japanese beetles, but what DON'T they eat?!) and typical watering for common garden veg like peppers.

It is pretty mild in flavor and does a wonderful job of thickening stews and soups without the hassle of a roux or the disappointment of using cornstarch.
It is traditionally used in gumbo, stew/soup, roasted, or a more modern way: deep fried. 😋

Give it a try in your next soups and let me know know what you think of okra!

Canned dilly beans and flash blanch to freeze the rest today. In the near future: canning salsa 😋

Every crop is different. Some crops go crazy and others dwindle.
This year I have a bumper crop of string beans, a pretty good crop of tomatoes, but the squash are not doing so great.

That's okay, because every year is different.
That's why we can, preserve and freeze what we can to help cover for the things that didn't do as well in hopes that they will be the bumper next time.

I am very happy for this years harvest as I was unable to grow or harvest anything last year.

I hated going to the cellar for things in the deep freeze or needing to put things in the deep freeze (ie homestead chicken). With the abundance from the garden this year I was encouraged to utilize this appliance efficiently, which meant moving it to be more accessible.

After I moved it David Ward asked why we didn't put it there in the first place....
Good question- pretty sure it was because this closet was full of baby/toddler toys while our baby/toddler was sleeping...
They are now old enough to play Roblox.... So I purged the closet to extend my kitchen 😉

Knock on wood as I have not had any this year. Last year I didn't have much of a garden and I think I temporarily broke the life cycle as these giant caterpillars puape in the soil where they can over winter.
Daily inspection is key for manual control, or you can use BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) on your plants. This is a natural soil bacteria that works well on munching pests (also works on, but not limited to: cut worms, potato beetles and larva, Japanese beetles) with the bonus of being harmless pollinators.
