Last year of high school for my youngest child? How did this happen?

This girl has been my little garden sidekick since she was a baby (yup, I was that kind of mom who let her infant roll around in the dirt and eat leaves. I keep telling her that's why she's so healthy. Ha!).

So many of her best memories were made right here in the garden, and we have years of fun photos to prove it.

When my daughter was 2, she started drawing. I'm a former art teacher, and I could immediately see her drawings were advanced.

As a little social experiment, I decided I wouldn't intervene or teach her anything about drawing unless she specifically asked for my help. And what a fascinating experiment it’s been! Her skills have grown exponentially and she’s won multiple awards and the attention of art schools.

For the past 16 years, I've been hoarding her artwork, fully convinced it's going to be worth a million dollars someday when she's a world-famous illustrator. 😉

A while back, as I was paging through the hoarded drawings, I found a few books we wrote together when she was 4 and didn’t know how to write. She dictated the story to me while she illustrated the pages, and they are precious.

This turned into an idea: what if we wrote and published a children's book together? I'd write it, she'd illustrate it.

We eagerly started writing, mapping out the text and illustrations… and then, well, life happened. It has a habit of doing that…

But the dream never left. I still want to help her become a published illustrator before she walks across that graduation stage.

I know, I know. Nine months is a short timeline. I know traditional publishing can take years.

So maybe we do this the way we do most things in this family… a little unconventionally. 🙃

If you've self-published a children's book (or know someone who has), I would love all your advice. Tips, warnings, timelines, "here's what I wish I'd known"... I'll take all of it.

This book baby needs to be born in the next 9 months, and I'd love a few midwives to cheer us on through this journey. 😉

Ah, mid-August on the farm.

Or as I like to call it, "The Time of Year I'm Not Allowed to Make Any Decisions." 🤣
By this point, we've been going HARD for 5 months straight. No breaks, no lulls, no mercy. That kind of pressure, exhaustion, and workload does funny things to your decision-making process.

My first few years of farming, mid-August is when I'd start dreaming about burning it all down. And by burning it all down, I mean literally 🔥as in, torching every last flower and starting a new life as someone with a normal job (a job with air conditioning would be nice).

Thankfully, over the years, I've turned the dial down from "BURN IT ALL DOWN" to "huh, here comes another catastrophe… and I'm honestly too tired to care." I’m making progress, friend.

There's a strange kind of peace in finally accepting the things you can't control. Very Stoic of me, I know. 🧘‍♀️

But let me be clear: I still don't trust myself to make decisions in August. My brain is mush. I can’t even remember my own phone number right now.

So here's how I handle it.

Every winter, I spend months making all my big decisions for the year ahead. I'm clear-headed, calm, logical, strategic and disciplined.

I call this woman Wintertime Lori.

My August self? She’s the complete opposite. Overwhelmed, frazzled, impulsive, scatter-brained and a wee bit unhinged.

I call her Summertime Lori.

These two women are stuck together, whether they like it or not.

Wintertime Lori makes the plans. She writes the map, the formula, the playbook and hands it off to Summertime Lori, praying she doesn’t mess it all up.

When Summertime Lori gets a wild idea to deviate from the plan (“let’s burn it all down!” “Ooo, we should tear that out and grow this instead!”), the calm, soothing voice of Wintertime Lori talks her down.

Is this weird? Maybe. But it's working (I haven’t started any fires yet)… so Wintertime Lori and Summertime Lori are sticking together.

Even if Summertime Lori isn't currently allowed near the big decisions. 😉

It's packed full of beautiful flowers, grown just for you on our farm. The selection changes every day, based on what’s in bloom.

PRO TIP: Every morning, I post a video on our Facebook and Instagram Stories, showing you what’s available.

Here are more tips for visiting our Flower House:

📍Located on the NW corner of 100th St and Homerich Ave in Byron Center. NOTE: The Flower House has its own driveway. Don’t pull into our home driveway. Our dogs will let you know you’re in the wrong place. 🤷‍♀️

🌻Open 8am-8pm, Tuesday - Saturday

🚫Closed on Sunday and Monday

🚗Please pull your vehicle ALL THE WAY UP to the white fence by the Flower House. Do NOT block the driveway as it causes traffic issues.

⭐️ Flower House is self-serve.

💲We accept: Cash, Check and Credit Card

💐Flowers are either on the bench or in the floral cooler, depending on the day.

🪣If you pull flowers out of the bucket to look at them, but put them back, MAKE SURE THEY'RE IN THE WATER. Thank you for helping us keep the flowers fresh!

💦There is a sink with water in the Flower House. Bring your own vase… or check our selection of donated vases under the payment counter.

🚫🐶Please do not bring your dog to the farm. Our farm dogs are trained to protect our livestock from stray/loose dogs, and they will consider your dog to be a threat.

🏠The farm is our private residence. Do not pull into our farmhouse driveway or wander the farm. Thanks for respecting our personal space! ❤️

This year, we’re offering DIY Bulk Flower Buckets, fresh from our farm.

These are buckets filled with all the ingredients you need to craft your own florals for your upcoming party or event.

Each bucket is packed with 6-7 different types of florals, including Focal Flowers, supporting Filler Flowers, and (the unsung hero of every arrangement) Foliage.
To keep things simple and easy for you, we offer 2 loose color palettes:

🌸Soft + Romantic: Muted pastel colors
🌻Bright + Bold: Saturated colors

These buckets are “Grower’s Choice”, which means we’ll fill your bucket with the best flowers in bloom on the farm that week.

The selection of flowers changes day by day. We can’t promise exactly what flowers or colors will be in your bucket, but we CAN promise you they will be beautiful!

These buckets are perfect for the relaxed, easygoing types who say “Surprise me!” and trust us to hand-pick something gorgeous and color-coordinated.

If you need specific colors or flowers to bring your vision to life… we recommend hiring a florist who can source flowers from around the world to craft your arrangements. We source all of our flowers from our Michigan flower fields, which means Mother Nature has the final say on what’s in bloom!

When I started my flower farm in 2017, I did almost everything by myself - the growing, the harvesting, the weeding, the website, the marketing, the selling, the customer service, the social media, the bookkeeping, the planning, the everything. To be honest, I prided myself in my ability to work harder than anyone I knew, to kick butt and take names, if you will.

I followed a lot of other entrepreneurs who were a "One Woman Show" too, and I believed I should be able to do everything on my own, like they did.

At the end of my first farming season of flying solo as a "Girl Boss Solopreneur", I literally collapsed in the field from exhaustion and wept. I had created a monster that was eating me alive.

I had to face the painful reality that running a farm business by myself was utterly unsustainable. I was mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically depleted. The burnout was so bad that I seriously considered setting the farm on fire so I could just walk away (this is not unusual for farmers… I've talked to so many others who feel the same way!).

I learned a hard lesson: "Super Woman" does not exist.
Nobody can do all the things, all the time, all by themselves.
And if they claim they can, something is slipping through the cracks… their marriage, their mental health, their friendships, their parenting, their physical health, their sanity, their quality of life.

I know this because these are all things that happened to me. Years 1 through 5 of my farming journey nearly broke me.

These days? I have a lot of help on the farm, and I'm so proud of my amazing team. I refuse to wear exhaustion, overwhelm, and lack of boundaries as my "Badge of Honor" anymore.

If you're looking for someone who will keep perpetuating the fantasy that you can
do it all,
all the time,
all by yourself… I am not your girl.

But if you're
tired of trying to prove your worth,
tired of doing it all alone
tired of feeling less than
tired of burnout and exhaustion… welcome. You're in the right place.

I'm on a mission to help others learn to humble themselves and ask for help. It's the hardest and best thing you will ever do.

Hi, my name is Lori. I'm a flower farmer, and I hate Zinnias. 🙋🏻‍♀️

There. I said it. 🙃

Go ahead. Shame me, judge me, unfollow me. Send me your strongly-worded Zinnia defense essays. (All actual reactions people have had when I share this true confession. Ha!)

I don't mind.

I've got my reasons: they leave a rash on my skin, Japanese beetles treat them like an all-you-can-eat buffet, and the powdery mildew that inevitably shows up in our humid summers is just plain gross.

But the real reason is simpler.
I've been ruined by Dahlias. Zinnias are ok in July and August, but as soon as the Dahlias enter the scene, Zinnias are dead to me. ☠️

I know it's an unpopular opinion. I know many of you love Zinnias. You do you!
I grow them anyway, but fantasize about a Zinnia-free garden someday. A girl can dream, right?

If I HAD to grow one kind, it'd be "Queen Lime Orange”. Even I have to admit they're kind of fabulous. We'll have some blooming later this season.
