Meateater, as a company, does a wonderful job of bringing the process of attaining food into perspective. A few nice points expressed in this article.

Ear tags may seem like a simple identifier, but a lot goes into tracking each animal! At McGuire Farms, the first number identifies that animals birth order for the calving season. The second number represents the year of birth. The white disc, known as an RFID tag, is also placed in the calf’s ear and identifies the calf with the American Angus Association. This can be scanned with a device that brings up a digital history of the animal so it can be tracked throughout its life. A blood sample is also submitted which helps the association track parentage and any genetic information that may be beneficial to the breed over time. Finally, a tattoo is placed in the calf’s ear showing the McGuire Farms identification number. Just incase any of these fall out!
