I honestly never expected this little page to grow the way it has. What started as me sharing pictures of chickens and hatching projects somehow turned into thousands of people following along through breeding plans, incubator adventures, hatch days, rose gardens, project pens, and my endless ability to convince myself that one more breeding project is exactly what I need.

We had a FANTASTIC hatch from Hidden Acre Hens this week! I was lucky enough to win 1 dozen of her eggs, 2 waffles in a row! They were packed beautifully, and every egg was in tact!🥳

Out of 2 1/2 dozen (30) shipped eggs, 24 made in into lockdown, and 22 hatched! Thank you Rachel! 🫶

I'm in love with our Splash F1 Olive egger babies! (Pic #3) And I'm SO excited for our heavy bloom Blue Copper Maran baby!! Hopefully its a girl!

Why mixing chicks can sometimes lead to coccidia problems!

Every hatching and brooding season brings a very common issue many of us eventually face… coccidia. But one thing I think many people do not realize about coccidia is that it is not always simply about always keeping a clean brooder.

A lot of times issues happen when chicks from different farms, breeder lines, or hatch environments are combined together. Even if they hatch in the same incubator and go straight into the same brooder afterward.

Each farm develops its own tiny microbial ecosystem over time. That includes different strains of coccidia, bacteria, and environmental organisms. Chicks from those farms slowly build resistance and immunity to what they are exposed to in THEIR environment.

Even the eggshells themselves can carry microscopic environmental contamination from the breeder farm. During hatch, chicks peck shells, roll eggs around, breathe in fluff and dust, and immediately begin interacting with all those organisms. So when unrelated chicks from different farms are suddenly hatched and brooded together, they can be exposed to strains of coccidia and other organisms their little immune systems have never encountered before. Add in stress from hatching, shipping, temperature changes, crowding, damp litter, etc, and it can quickly create the perfect storm for coccidia issues 😞

Healthy adult birds often carry low levels of coccidia naturally without ever showing symptoms. The issue usually comes from mixing different microbial environments together before the chicks have fully developed immunity.

But then you may say, “I only add genetics from the same farms.” Well, think about it this way: those farms may have added genetics from different farms into their own stock over time, bringing additional strains into an already very complex microbial ecosystem. So the strains you brought in from them last year may not necessarily be the same strains coming in now.

One thing that has personally worked very well for me as a preventative, especially when dealing with mixed lines or outside genetics, is doing a 5 day Corid treatment around:
• 4 weeks old
• 8 weeks old
• and sometimes 12 weeks if needed (normally by this age I rarely need to)

After treatment I also supplement with Rooster Booster in the water for 2 days afterward to help replenish vitamins and minerals, since Corid can temporarily deplete important nutrients while doing its job. Personally, I would not skip this step if you choose to follow what I do. Not replenishing those vital nutrients can compromise the chicks’ immune system and potentially open the door for other issues.

And of course good ventilation, dry bedding, clean waterers, low stress, and not overcrowding are also HUGE pieces of the puzzle!

Chick health truly starts with understanding that biosecurity and immunity go hand in hand ☺️

And if you have lost chicks to coccidia before, give yourself some grace. As heartbreaking as it is, most of us who have raised poultry long enough have been there at some point. The key is to keep learning, sharing what worked for you, and helping each other thrive ☺️.

I am so glad you are here.
My name is Rebecca, and I am thrilled to start this journey with you all!

A little bit about me:
I am a 24 year old wife and mother to 2 little girls. While they are my pride and joy in life, my Faith in Jesus Christ is what keeps me grounded and rooted in peace.
I grew up a California city girl, but ALWAYS dreamed of moving to the country one day and running a small farm or homestead. After graduating high school in 2020, I went on a trip to Branson Missouri for a family reunion. I quickly fell in love with the Missouri terrain and spirit! While there, I felt the Lord prompt me that I should look into housing options that would allow me to move there. In response to this counsel, I extended my trip a few days to try finding a roommate within my church's young adult community. While attending a Young Single Adult Dance, a tall and (very) handsome man asked me to dance...I don't remember what we talked about, but I know that once I mentioned my hope of moving to the area, he was very happy to do what he could to help make that happen... This young man was Kyler, my (now) husband! We exchanged numbers, I found a girl who needed a roommate, and we were inseparable after that. Kyler flew to California to help me make the drive to Missouri 1 month later, and we were then married 4 months later.

Presently, we are in our 5th year of marriage, very much in love, and have 2 beautiful daughters that bring so much joy to our lives.
We currently live on 5 1/2 acres in Cabool, Missouri that we are putting to good use with our 50+ chickens! While this property does not belong to us, we plan to stay in this general vicinity, and hopefully find a place with just as much, or more land! And ideally it will also have a nice looking hill that looks deserving of being referred to as "Harmony Hill".😄

The word "Harmony" is quite special to me for a few reasons. For starters, Harmony is actually my middle name! This is what inspired the name "Harmony Hill Hens & Homestead". It feels a little ironic that I was named Harmony, because not only have I turned out to be a peacemaker type, but I have also been blessed with a talent for music! Harmony has become something that I actively strive to create and emanate in my life. I love peace. I love compassionate love. I love extending people Grace. And for me, peace is created by being in harmony with God, His plan for me, and with the people closest to me.

This brings me to my vision for this homestead of ours. Ultimately, I aspire to create a haven of a homestead. One where peace permeates our land, our home, and most importantly for you, our animals. I am a firm believer that you reap what you sow. If I sow peace, that peace will multiply and spread to those around me. This is what I want my animals to show evidence of. I want them to feel safe, and at home. My goal is to raise and offer wholesome, quality, happy, healthy birds and more to you. I want to share a piece of MY peace, with you. And I want to connect with God, and share His love while I'm at it.
One day, as a result of my efforts to cultivate this dream, I hope to look out my window to see beautiful green pastures, horses of my own grazing calmly, birds free-ranging, a nice, productive garden to sustain us, and most of all my family happily working together because we all want to be good stewards of our little slice of God's creations together.☀️
