No concrete, no growth promotant drugs, no antibiotics, no GMO grain sprayed with chemicals. All natural, all normal, all good. Only this isn’t normal today—it’s completely unconventional. Even locally raised pork is given antibiotics, conventional feed, and is often raised on concrete or in dirt/mud pens.

In contrast, our pigs are constantly moved to fresh paddocks throughout our farm, giving them new ground to graze, root, and enjoy. Our rotational grazing practice makes healthy environments so that these drugs, chemicals, and antibiotics become unnecessary to keep our pigs healthy. The result? Pigs that are happy, pork that tastes delicious, meat that makes our bodies strong and healthy.

It’s a sustainable system based on natural ecology, not industrial efficiency. And you can see and taste the difference.

Come and feast.

Our spring piglets are on pasture! The symbiotic relationship between creature and environment is incredibly great—as these pigs root, eat, and disturb our farm, they are helping us rebuild soil, feed soil microbiota, and make healthier, more diverse, more resilient pastures and woods. They are happy, we are happy, so you can be happy. It’s a win-win-win. Try our pork and taste the difference in our regenerative approach to agriculture. There is always abundance, we just have to know where to look.

At Old River Farms, we are working to bring a local food revival. Not a reinvention, but a restoration. Not a retrofit, but a renewal. Not a re-organization, but a resurrection. If this language sounds religious, that’s because it is. Most religions see that man’s deepest need is spiritual. Christianity claims that man’s greatest problem is his spiritual death, and that what he needs is not awakening, but resurrection. In many ways, we think the same is true for our modern food system. At this time in history, our spiritual need seems to parallel our our food system needs: not optimization or greater efficiency, but resurrection. Stay tuned as we continue to post from our spring on-farm slaughter and our experiences from our smoked meats projects: A Mission to Cure. Leave us a comment!

Ribs! Never frozen, fresh from a pig we raised and slaughtered on our farm. Nothing that passes through America’s vast, industrialized food system comes close to the taste, testament, and goodness of this meat. Please help support local Arkansas agriculture and a local food revival. It’s a thorough mashup of prodigal ideals and hard, cold reality. You can’t argue with delicious, real food on a plate in front of you. The good news: we have plenty to share!

The Arkansas Delta should be renowned for its food, not just its global, industrial farm exports. Our mission is to bring real food back to farms in the Delta. We raise our hogs in hardwood lowlands, developing agriculture models and markets custom tailored to our region, climate, and palettes. Can I get an AMEN? I don’t believe in silver bullets. But I believe that these pigs are just part of the beginning. When the river laps the sides of the bank long enough, she cuts a new channel. Join us in swell. There are many who are a part of this river with us. Shop at www.oldriverfarms.com.

Our pigs are back on pasture after the snow. When they were calling for 30” of snow, we brought the few remaining hogs up to our very large pole barn. They are pleased to be back outside now.

It was an absolute pleasure to attend Buckman Brewhouse’s soft opening last Friday night. To say Cabot is lucky to have this place is an understatement! Their food is the real deal. Real ingridents, cooked/baked/sauteed/pickled the right way. We sat with our friends and family, sampled all the drinks and were so impressed by the taste of our dishes and drinks. (That Buckman Vintage though…🤌) We love to be in the kitchen ourselves, and usually going out to restaurants leaves us a little disappointed, but not here! We can’t wait to come back and be regulars at Buckmans. Thank you for all the hard work and love you put into your place—we are so excited for you and the many years to come! (Only wish we had taken better pictures of all the amazing stuff we had, but we were too busy enjoying it all!)
