Gemma dog update!

At 4.5 months old she is about 2" taller at the back than Nova! I would say probably in that 50-60lbs range! Getting a still photo is not an option.

Gemma, Nova and Theodore play HARD. Especially when she comes in for dinner!

Shes a very good girl, loves her animals and puts on about 3-5miles of patrolling daily! Not much gets by her! We also love the fact we can track her from anywhere via GPS!

Best decision ever getting a solid, working farm dog!

Tonight ended with a very impromptu road trip to Malone. It was one of those "today-only" deals you just do not pass up.

The original plan was simple: pick up two sheep to stay with us for a bit untill a later date.... ;) ​We left with two sheep... and a broken buckskin Nubian buckling. 🐐

​Oh, and because no farm run is ever truly finished in one trip, I have to drive back tomorrow to pick up a calf hutch.

​It is always something around here! 😂 yeah they have names - I think the goat is Bo.. lol

Closing the loop on the deep Litter method we talked about a few months ago. Jolene wanted to share with you all and was teaching Mabel all about it.

​If you’ve been following along, you know we rely heavily on the deep litter method to manage bedded areas on the farm. Today, it was time for a full clean-out! The girls stall got a full clean out today. The boys and chickens will be on tomorrow's list!

​It’s always satisfying to strip back those layers and see just how well the system works. Below the top dry layer was rich, earthy material almost completely broken down and ready for the compost pile. It has no smell and is mostly dry today it was about 8" thick.

​It’s a lot of pitchfork work, but seeing that clean start (and knowing how great the garden will grow next season because of it) makes every bit of the effort worth it. I start fresh with a simple layer of barn lime and wood chips. Thats it!

In USDA Zone 5b, late August leaves roughly 6 to 7 weeks before the average first hard frost (early October). Normally anyways.
​ if you are still holding onto harden dreams you still have time! ​Direct Sow from Seed Now!

​Radishes (20–30 days): The fastest crop for late August. Varieties like French Breakfast or Cherry Belle will easily mature in 3–4 weeks.

​Arugula (21–30 days): Highly cold-tolerant greens that thrive in cool autumn air and mature rapidly.

​Spinach (30–40 days): Thrives in falling temps. Even if leaves remain small by frost, spinach easily overwinters under row covers or deep mulch to give you an extremely early flush next spring.

​Leaf Lettuce & Baby Kale (30–40 days): Harvest as tender "cut-and-come-again" baby greens rather than waiting for full heads.

​Turnips (35–45 days): Quick-growing varieties (like Tokyo Cross or Hakurei) will produce small, sweet roots and delicious greens before hard frosts arrive.

If you can find nursery Starts still use them!

Oh and guess what? ​Kale & Swiss Chard are so extremely frost-hardy; cold nights and light frosts actually improve their flavor!

Dont turn your back on the garden for a few days! Thats when she revolts! Time to fill our pantry and keep the stand stocked!

After I loaded up the stand today i was able to work in the greenhouse while keeping a close eye on our dog, Theo.

I went ahead and added in the 12" temperature controlled power vent and the first set of benches! I will be adding in another row of shelving below the benches on each side. On the bottom of the top bench i will be attaching full spectrum L.E.D grow lights for anything on the lower level.

I only want to do this once and do it the right way!
