Lavender breeders, this one is for you. 💜

The so-called “shredder gene” is one of those topics that gets talked about often in lavender birds, but not always with much clarity. In my newest blog post, I’m breaking down what breeders mean by shredded feathering, how it may present, what the lavender gene actually does, what current research suggests, and why we need to be careful about separating breeder terminology from proven genetics.

I also share how I approach feather quality in my own lavender program, including selective breeding, evaluating birds from chick to adult, keeping records, and periodically breeding back to quality black birds every 3–4 generations to help maintain strength, type, and overall vigor.

Lavender is beautiful, but responsible breeding means selecting for the whole bird — not just the color. This is imperative to keep the feather quality intact.

🌻 The sunflower field is showing off! 🌻

From sunny yellows and warm golden tones to deep burgundy, bronze, and beautifully brushed bicolors, every walk through this patch reveals something new. Some blooms are bold and dramatic, while others look as though they were painted by hand. I’m in love with them all!!

We planted a mix of varieties this season, and watching all of these colors unfold together has been really fun! I walk the rows daily to see what colors are emerging. 😍 Truly one of my favorite summer pastimes! This is just a little glimpse of what’s blooming around the farm right now. 💛🧡🤎🌻🌱

Cut sunflowers are available now—we’ll share all the details in an upcoming post!

Some updated pics of the Cuckoo Ameraucana!

These guys are maturing beautifully, and I’m very pleased with the direction of this group. 🖤🤍

When evaluating young birds, color/pattern is only one part of the picture. Breed type matters more IMHO. I’m looking for a balanced, well-proportioned body, good depth through the chest, proper carriage, slate legs, a neat pea comb, and the full muffs and beard that give the Ameraucana its unmistakable expression.

These growouts are showing excellent type for their age, along with especially nice muffs and beards.

Their cuckoo patterning is also becoming more defined as they mature, creating that striking contrast across the feathers while still allowing their overall structure to remain the focus.

There is still plenty of growing and changing ahead, but this is a very promising group! 😍 I’m excited to see the egg color of this generation. The ladies should be laying soon! 👏🏻🩵

Lavender harvest has come and gone, but the beauty of the season is still worth sharing. 💜🌿

For a few short weeks, the rows were buzzing with bees, the air was filled with fragrance, and every bundle was cut by hand at just the right stage.

It’s one of our favorite times of year on the farm—a season of color, scent, and a whole lot of hard work behind the scenes.

Until the Fall, when it all begins again….💜

Meet Cloud and Cotton! 💜☁️

These two fluffy little beauties are our Lavender Silkied Ameraucana growouts—and they are quickly becoming 2 of my favorites!

The Silkied Ameraucana, often called a SiAm, is a rare and fascinating variation of the Ameraucana. They are not a Silkie cross or a hybrid. They are true Ameraucanas carrying an uncommon recessive mutation that gives their feathers that wonderfully soft, flowing, silkied texture while retaining the characteristics Ameraucanas are known and loved for. 😍

Cloud and Cotton are still growing into their feathers, but they are already showing so much personality—and plenty of fluff! We’re excited to watch these two lovely birds mature. 💜
