Today we pause to honor Kaylee Jade Goncalves, whose life was tragically taken on November 13, 2022. Her family has chosen to carry her light forward in a beautiful way—through a new dahlia named in her memory.
With compassion and generosity, Rivers Dahlias created and dedicated the Kaylee Jade Dahlia, a bloom described by Kaylee’s family as “bright & bold, delicate & fragile… a living flower that can remain long after we are not here ourselves.”
As an Idaho dahlia grower, Flaming Acres Dahlias stands with the Goncalves family in their mission to remember, respect, honor, and educate others about Kaylee Jade forever. The impact of such loss is beyond words, yet love and beauty remind us that darkness never has the final say. The Kaylee Jade Dahlia will be available in December at Rivers Dahlias
Our hearts are with the Goncalves family today. May Kaylee’s light continue to shine through every bloom.

In the midst of unimaginable grief, Kaylee’s family sought something beautiful, something living, something that could carry her light forward in this world. Kaylee’s mother, who has always held a special love for dahlias, reached out in hopes of finding a grower who might help honor her daughte...

Donuts, Rain, and the Wonder of Friendship
This morning dawned brisk and bright—40 degrees with a possibility of rain in the forecast. Our friends Steve and Cathy arrived bearing donuts (a farmer’s breakfast of champions) and cheerful spirits, ready for day two of dahlia digging. All four of us, now seasoned dahlia diggers, exchanged good-natured groans as we stretched our backs and geared up for another round.

The hum of the tractor broke the morning stillness as Dion made the final adjustments to the potato digger—a machine that’s about to earn its keep for the next several weeks. Our friends Steve and Cathy Hill joined us for the very first day of dahlia tuber harvest, and together, we dug into the ...

🦚 One of the peahens has decided to become my dear friend. Right now, she’s perched on the deck railing, peering through the window as I write this post. Every few minutes, she gives a gentle tap-tap-tap with her beak, just to make sure I’m still paying attention.

Humans must be quite the curiosity to these creatures. Cooper and Gus are curled up at my feet, sound asleep, though they could be out roaming the farm with Dion. The clouds have rolled in, the wind is stirring, and maybe—just maybe—the animals feel it too. My feathered friend now has her head tucked into her wing, a soft bundle of calm against the storm.

These are the kinds of days that make a person slow down. To pour a hot drink, sit by the window, and let the quiet moments invite reflection. There’s so much to be grateful for right now…

📣 Calling All Dahlia Detectives!🕵️
Guess what, friends? The dahlias have done their dazzling work in the fields, and now it’s our turn to dig in. Quite literally.
Here at Flaming Acres, we’re rolling up our sleeves for one of the most exciting times of the year—tuber harvest! This is when we carefully dig up those magical clumps hiding beneath the soil and prepare them for next spring’s blooms. But here’s the twist: we can’t (and don’t want to) do it alone. We’re inviting YOU to join in the fun!

“There’s something about a good rain that changes everything. Yesterday’s showers carried into the night, and this morning when I stepped outside, the farm felt brand new. The dahlia fields had perked up as if they’d all taken a deep, refreshing drink. Blooms that had been shy and slow to open finally unfurled, showing their true colors in glorious waves across the rows. 🌧️ ✨
The sky still held that after-rain clarity, making every color richer and more vivid. It was one of those days where you feel like you’re standing in the middle of a living painting.”

Transforming Flaming Acres from an Ag-Tourism Destination to Dahlia Tuber Farm
If you had visited Flaming Acres a few years ago, your memories might include navigating a corn maze, sipping apple cider, or bouncing along on a hayride. Our farm was built on experiences—fall festivals, school tours, and family weekends celebrating the beauty of the harvest season.
We loved those days. The laughter of children echoing across the fields, the smell of kettle corn drifting across the park, the piles of pumpkins ready for carving—all of it made Flaming Acres a place of joy and connection. And for a season, it was good.
But seasons change. And sometimes, so do callings.

Discovering the Dahlia
Between planting hay fields and carving out corn mazes, we decided to try something new—What began as a small patch of dahlias quickly took over our hearts. Dahlia blooms are dazzling, abundant, and full of character.
We realized these flowers weren’t just beautiful. They were an invitation—to slow down, to steward God’s creation with care, and to grow something that could be shared far beyond our farm gates.
