What a busy week! We are in the middle of foaling, breeding and irrigating season and there is so much to be thankful for every time a birth goes as planned. People not involved in equine breeding would be amazed at how many times things don't work out in spite of your best efforts to get a live foal on the ground. It takes many people to help keep things rolling and we so appreciate our helper girls and veterinarians. We couldn't do it without them.
We are currently hauling into the vet clinic to ultrasound for preg checks on the mares for next year's crop. Shown here is a quick snapshot of the ranch girls with mares waiting for their turn to be checked at the clinic.
Dr. Liz Scott at Idaho Equine has been our go to person for reproductive work for over 44 years of collaboration, and has seen several generations of our horses come into the world. Since we deal so much with an aging mare population due to mares being out on the endurance trail before coming back to the broodmare band, Dr. Scott has been instrumental in helping us get those special foals. She has helped bring many Belesemo foals into existence or confirmed pregnancies for us. We snapped a quick photo of her usual position behind a mare in the stocks when we are at the clinic!😊
In between, we are handling foals, teaching them the basics of becoming proper horse citizens by leading, picking up feet, being haltered, etc.
We are also happy to get Belesemo horses into the hands of new owners or helping current members of our Belesemo family facilitate getting horses into the hands of other family members. Shown here is Belesemo Apollo (Belesemo Ibn Trad x Om El Saleena) owned by Sarah Hutchins climbing aboard the Equine Express van to go completely across the United States to his new owner Natasha Cumbie in North Carolina. Safe travels Buddy as the journey will take approximately five days. We are excited for Natasha to get a second Belesemo line horse.
We are so grateful and blessed in all the veterinarian, ranch helpers, clients and family that help keep everything going. THANK YOU is not a strong enough word to express our deep appreciation!! ❣️

Memorial Day weekend is a good time to look back and reflect not only on the people we loved that have made a difference in our lives, but also perhaps the horses that have contributed so much as well.
Breeding programs are based on generational performance - foal crop after foal crop. In keeping with our current important ranch mares theme lately, we thought we would feature a great mare line that has contributed to the program and is still contributing out on the trail and in the sport horse arena.

BELESEMA MOONSONG (Belesemo Trad x Moonczet) has been an important line down through the years when we first leased her dam from Kay & Bill Shiverick in 1983 - 43 years ago. Moonczet produced us 3 great fillies in a row all by Belesemo Trad, and the last - Moonsong, we kept in our broodmare band after she had a great endurance career with Anne Hall in Auburn, California.
Our special thanks to Anne for completing six 50 mile rides on her for us, proving her endurance abilities They are shown here at the Camp Far West ride in 1997 and our gratitude to Anne is endless.

Now, 29 years later Bentley French is shown riding Moonsong's son, BELESEMO MOON CRESENT (Belesemo Ibn Trad x Belesema Moonsong) two weeks ago at the Mt. Carmel XP Ride - riding the LD distance all 4 days and receiving some great awards - Overall LD Fast Time Award and Overall LD Best Condition Award. Congratulations to them both!!! We are excited to see more!

Moonsong also produced the following winning sport horses:
BELESEMO WINDSONG - (BA Fantizon x Belesema Moonsong) Owned by Val Stone of Massachusetts has had an incredible open sport horse career in the past winning:
New England Horsemen's Council (NEHC) Hunter Pleasure high point award- 1st place
Massachusetts Horsemen's Council (MHC) Hunter Pleasure high point award - 1st place
Southeast Regional Hunter Pleasure high point award - 1st place
Cape Cod Hunter Pleasure high point award - 1st place
Hunter Pleasure championship for Hunter Pleasure for MHC (Massachusetts Horsemen's Council)
NEHC (New England Horsemen's Council) for the second consecutive year
Reserve Champion in Hunter Pleasure for the Cape Cod Hunter
Series and
Southeast Hunter Association in the Hunter Pleasure Division

and BELESEMA WIND SONNET (BA Fantizon x Belesema Moon Song) owned by Marianne Rogers of Holland, Texas, has won the following in sport horse classes in the past:
Region IX Reserve Champion Mare - Arabian Sport Horse Mares Open
Region IX Top Five - Arabian Sport Horse Mares - ATH
Congratulations and our sincerest appreciation to all of you for helping make this great mare line a generational success!

And just like that, another week has slipped by in a rush. Irrigation is everything to those of us that live in a desert climate and our water supply from the mountains is in short supply this year. Dirk has his hands full trying to keep things going with our extreme high and low temperatures - those icicles on the morning irrigation change are real in spite of 80+ degree days.
My days have been busy breeding and foaling mares, and in keeping with last week's Mother's Day theme, we thought we would show the new arrivals so far this season.
We have some antique bloodline foals this year with very aged parents. Many thanks to Veronica Stanley for her help in foaling out some of our aged and health challenged treasures.
FILLY - (Belesemo Ibn Trad x Belesema Magic Antigua by Belesemo Magic). A miracle filly due to her dam's health issues acquired during pregnancy, we waited with bated breath for this very high percentage CMK youngster, shown here with Veronica's son, Evander. She is a treasure!
C**T - (Belesemo Ibn Trad x TA Khara Mia by Algonkwin). A sibling to national winners, this guy has a fantastic future ahead shown here with our granddaughter Lundyn. His sire is 29 and dam is 23.
FILLY - (Belesemo Ibn Trad x Aelfleah Ananda by Ibn Taam-Rud) a very high percentage CMK/Davenport/Al Khamsa filly. Her sire is 29 and dam is a first foal at 20. Anna has been a multi-regional and national endurance winner prior to becoming a mother.
C**T - (Belesemo Ibn Trad x DBA Lpemargo++/ by *Goliat) A first purebred foal at age 20, Margo is a pure Polish treasure with multiple regional sport horse and dressage titles, along with Legion of Honor and Legion of Merit titles.
The first pasture turnout of the year and getting acquainted through the fence. Stay tuned for more updates!

Crazy doesn't describe the past couple of weeks at the ranch. We have had new foals born and our first grandson has joined 3 granddaughters. The wonder of new life and the Lord's creation is everywhere.
Since today is Mother's Day, we thought it would be fitting on the ranch page, to pay tribute to without a doubt, the most influential mare in the Belesemo Arabians' breeding program - VELVET DAWN.

Although not what one would normally associate with our CMK foundation mares, Dawn's influence is spread everywhere throughout the program. She was acquired in 1986 - 40 years ago - and not our typical large, chestnut with white type mares. She was small (14.1), grey and had the most classic head typical of her straight Egyptian sire line. She was however, very heavy CMK on the bottom side of her pedigree and that was what drew us to her originally. But her fabulous disposition and her "incubator" producing status is what endeared her to the program. Whatever stallion you bred Dawn to she reproduced faithfully in her foals. When bred to Belesemo Trad, she always produced large, chestnut with white marked foals. When bred to RD Arizon, she produced black, exotic Black Stallion movie looking foals.
She was one of a kind, and is represented in 9 foals (8 for the ranch, including her first - a surviving set of twins in 1987.) She currently has 91 grandget with more on the way. Not only was she the dam to two important Belesemo stallions - Belesemo Ibn Trad and Belesemo Obsidian - but she was also the dam and grandam of many national winning endurance and sport horse offspring, including a Tevis Top Ten horse. Only one daughter graced her production years. Belesemo Ibn Trad is her last surviving offspring at age 29 on the ranch.
Her presence and blood is everywhere in the breeding program.
We salute and remember her today for being the Grand Dame of Belesemo Arabians.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY!! Literally a BLAST FROM THE PAST!
We have been wanting to feature not only the wonderful purchasers of our horses that make the ranch what it is, but also the hard working girls that have helped in the weekly rituals so necessary to a horse farm.
For the past 35 years that we have lived on this ranch, we have had 2 to 4 girls that come in once or twice a week in spring and summer, volunteering to assist us in cleaning stalls, pens, teasing mares and handling foals.
They range in age from 13 to 18 and work May through October, helping us with the physical labor. Sometimes they are able to stay a couple summers, some have come back for four or more years every summer. We have enjoyed taking them to horse shows,, attending endurance and trail rides, parades, rodeos and also going to Scottsdale, U.S. Sport Horse Nationals and Cavalia in Canada to increase their equestrian experience.
They in turn have been horse crazy girls that have several times gifted us with their artistic talents as well. We wish we could feature photos of them all through the 35 years, and the generations of horses they have helped raise. We were amazed when we counted up 40 girls that have blessed us with their help. Many of them now have families of their own - even graduating kids! We hope it has been as much fun for them as it has been for us. What a fantastic ride and partnership it has been! Thank you for the wonderful memories!

THIS!!!
When ranch visitors comment on our beautiful green pastures and great life for horses - this is the man that keeps it all going. Without my husband DIRK and his efforts for the past 44 years, there would be no Belesemo Arabian Ranch - or dream fulfillment! He is literally the glue that keeps everything running - from irrigating, to fixing everything, to holding mares, there is no way this breeding program would exist without him.
He is shown here yesterday digging out a mainline pipe that sprang a leak over the winter, and only found when he turned the water on after working two days to get the system up and running. So now, it has to be turned off, mainline dug up by hand so he doesn't damage the fragile aluminum, repaired and replaced as quickly as possible before our minimal water allotment runs out- as it keeps running once you order the water. With no snow pack this past winter, every precious drop counts this year.
His efforts are enjoyed by TA KHARA MIA (Algonkwin x TA Khe Toska by Khemosabi) in the mare/foal pasture as she imminently awaits her BELESEMO IBN TRAD foal at age 23.
THANK YOU MY DEAR HUSBAND!!

WOW! And just like that, Easter is already a full week in the rear view mirror.
So much has happened this past week. The first foal of the season arrived, sired by 29 yr. old Belesemo Ibn Trad and out of 20 yr. old DBA Lpemargo++/. This lively young man is going to be a good one with many endurance and sport horse national champions on both side of his pedigree! Thanks to Andrea & Jeff Maas in New York for allowing Margo to join our broodmare band.
The yearling c**t BELESEMO DOMINO (Belesemo Ibn Trad x Sans Joy) found a new home with Erica Stubbs in Monroe, Washington, and is enjoying the best life possible. He has already had numerous adventures learning the ropes, tailing behind Erica's older gelding going through the forest and through water, enjoying his beautiful new home. We are so excited to watch his future adventures! Welcome to the Belesemo Family Erica!! CONGRATULATIONS!!
The hardest working animal on the farm - "no mice" is her motto so a nap and belly rub is in order!!
Stay tuned for the foaling excitement and incoming ride reports - the year has just begun!!

My goodness! And just like that spring is here and we need to be outside getting everything unpacked from winter. It makes for rare posting days! Our spring is at least a month early and showing it in the unseasonable temperatures, growth of pastures, orchards blooming and the migrating bird patterns. We have grabbed a few photos of the hum of activity on the ranch that is at least 6 weeks earlier than usual. It is an exciting time and one that never grows old!
The peach and cherry orchards that surround the ranch in full bloom, and the mares abandoning the hay piles for the fresh, new grass.
Our granddaughters Levicee & Lundyn leading the first mare to foal any day now, out to her morning grass pasture. (DBA Lpemargo++/)
The snow geese whose migrating habits have shifted the past few years and fill fields in our area by the tens of thousands.
Incredible sunrises and sunsets! The seasonal beauty of God's creation!
WELCOME BLESSED SPRING!!

Thank you everyone for your many kind comments regarding RD ARIZON. We were amazed at the response we had regarding his legacy. We will post more on him in the future .

However, today we want to post about a FANTASTIC happening this past weekend at the FUN IN THE SUN ENDURANCE FESTIVAL in Williston, Florida.

FITS as it is called, is an FEI qualification ride and we had 3 mares from the Belesemo Arabian breeding program that competed. The results were amazing with MEG SLEEPER and BELESEMA SAPPHIRE (the Breyerfest horse) finishing FIRST on the FEI 100, with HIGH VET SCORE and BEST CONDITION! They are now qualified for possible selection to the United States team for the World Championships in Saudi Arabia in November. We couldn't be more excited for Meg and her amazing partnership with Sapphire We have posted video from the ride below that Meg sent us!. CONGRATULATIONS to Meg and Sapphire.

KARRI BRUSKOTTER and BELESEMA SANS FLAME placed 6th on the AERC portion of the 100 mile ride. Karri has a wonderful write up about her ride that you can access here https://www.facebook.com/BruskotterFarmsArabians/ and we are pasting photos below as well. This ride was extremely brutal with temperatures in the high 80's. For horses to even finish is a great accomplishment! CONGRATULATIONS to Karri and Flame also!

CHRISTINA MARTIN and BELESEMA TIGER LILY had a 3 way tie for 5th place on the 50 mile ride. This is Lily's third 50 and we hope to get some photos soon! CONGRATULATIONS to Christina and Tiger Lily. We are looking forward to following your career together. Will post photos when we get them.!

The wonderful back story on these three mares is they were all out of the same dam, CAL FLAMING EMIT that Heather & Jeremy Reynolds graciously allowed to join the Belesemo Arabian broodmare band in 2011 and are all sired by Belesemo stallions. They are half and three-quarter sisters to each other. Emit originally came from South America and placed 8th on this same ride with Jeremy in 2010. Many thanks to the Reynolds for sending Emit to us 15 years ago. Her legacy continues!
