We're officially a federally recognized non-profit! In the whirlwind of our post-Summit highs, we received a letter confirming our status. This application process began about a year ago and took a lot of teamwork with some input and help from our friends over in Washington-- Viva Farms! Thanks to everyone who helped us.

We're stoked to share our new logo with you by Meg Sutton Creates.

We wanted our logo to feel grounded in place with Idaho as the background, and a balsamroot as the plant. Two flowers with intertwining stems symbolize the collaborative and supportive nature of our organization and the incubator farm we are aiming to create. The big, intertwined taproot, our namesake, illustrates that we are rooted where we are, and here for the long haul to create a strong food system. Lastly, the logo evokes a home-grown, grassroots, and playful vibe!

Planning for the Future of Treasure Valley Ag Workshop: Opportunities for Citizens, Cities and Counties
Have you looked at all the land use changes in the Treasure Valley and thought, "I could do this better"? Here's your chance. In this hands-on workshop, researchers will give a brief look at the state of agricultural viability in our valley and then it's your turn! Working with policy tools, you'll map the obstacles for local ag, learn about land use policy tools, and see why some solutions work better than others. Feeling ambitious? Design your own policy tool and pitch a better fix.
Open to planners, farmers, students, decision-makers, and curious citizens alike. No experience required, just bring your ideas.

Option B:
Collaborative Agriculture: Big Farms Roundtable
In Big Team Farms, Sarah Mock busts some of the rugged individualist myths that accompany farming as a livelihood, and offers examples of folks bucking those trends, building collaborations, and seeing their farm’s success skyrocket in the process. Join Sarah and Treasure Valley farmers and aspiring farmers to explore the ways we can collaborate to build stronger, more resilient, and more profitable local farms that care for the land and the people tending them.

Breakout sessions! We'll have two with two options each.

Option A:
Planning for Agritourism
Let's understand planning! A local planner will give an overview of comprehensive plans, zoning codes, and the role of planners, who must balance the competing desires of diverse stakeholders. We will then focus on case studies from farmers and businesses who have successfully navigated the planning and zoning process to add agritourism to their operations, offering perspectives about the process that will be useful for both planners and for other farmers considering agritourism.

Special guests: Michaella Owens (Ada County Planner) and Brad McIntyre (McIntyre Family Farm)

Option B:
Collaborative Land Conservation: Community Farmland Preservation Roundtable
We don’t question that parks belong in the public commons, and farms belong in private hands. We’ll explore alternatives to the individual/family farmland ownership system. We’ll discuss potential alternative models for agriculture land holding in our valley and how diverse partners can come together to hold land long-term. We’ll also explore how farmers can build equity within land-holding models where they don’t own the land they farm, and what mechanisms are available for funding land ownership for a collective. This is a vital conversation for considering how the Treasure Valley will grow healthy food for itself into the future, and how we can incentivize the organic and regenerative practices the next generation of farmers are eager to put into place when they have secure, long-term access to farmland.
