Introducing OHK Rosette Count 30-7. He is sired by A3C Rosette Count 1-1 (pictured in his working clothes) that we acquired from Al Christian back in 2020. 1-1 is a double bred boar out of the Rosette Count 12-1 boar over a litter mate gilt 12-8. The 12 litter was also bred by Al Christian from frozen semen out of WB Rosette Count 56-1.

On the bottom side of the 30-7 boar pedigree is a sow that is also sired by A3C Rosette Count 12-1. This sow was one of the dams of our 2023 progeny test pen that was awarded #1 Berkshire Prime pork sire. The 30 litter was a 8th parity litter with 11 born / 10 weaned with a 169 pound 21 day old litter weight.

We are using 30-1 to increase the concentration of the rosette count genetics in our herd. A3C Rosette Count 1-1 has sired many daughters that now have several generations in production for us and are super maternal, heavy milking females, that farrow unassisted and raise big litters!

We have been considering building a hot nursery for pigs coming out of the farrowing house. After much thought, research, considering our mostly mild climate and the fact we pasture finish all of our hogs, we decided to try a set up that incorporated deep bedding but not a hoop barn (basically a cargill with a larger Barn area ). This way the pigs have plenty of straw bedding and an insulated barn to stay warm and transition from the farrowing house to the outside. So far it’s working extremely well even with the temps down into the 20’s earlier in the week. Our plan is to move the pigs at weaning to this set up until they reach about 60-75 pounds, then they will go to pastures where they will be topped out. Already wishing we built it bigger!

Here at Oak Hill Berkshires the health and wellbeing of our Berkshire hogs is our #1 priority. With the winter storm moving in tomorrow, we are working overtime to make sure the feeders and bins are full and there’s plenty of bedding. This way the hogs have full bellies of freshly made feed and bedding to keep warm! As you can see in the pictures below the new litters in the farrowing house think it’s sunny and 75 outside!

While you are hopefully enjoying some 100% registered Berkshire pork tomorrow while the snow falls, we will be making sure all our our hogs are just as cozy so you have plenty of 100% registered Berkshire pork chops for the grill this summer! h
