California Heritage Farms

California Heritage Farms Grass fed and finished beef and heritage pork. 100% GMO free, pasture raised, & antibiotic free. We are stewards of the land.

Pasture raise heritage pork free of GMOs, antibiotics, and unnatural hormones. We work hard to maintain harmony between the dirt under our boots, the animals that sustain us, and a lifestyle we feel proud of. We believe that great food doesn't start in the kitchen. Great food starts with warm sunshine, green grass, and clean water, then curated by the farmer who feeds the animal, nurtures the land, and harvests the bounty. When food is raised as nature intended, a great meal is sure to follow.

Seems like fresh bedding disappears faster than feed around here.

Every buyer likes a different kind of hog. Some want 275–300, others like 301–350, and some want them even heavier.

Today was sorting day. We ran them across the scale, marked them with different paint colors on their backs, and sorted them into shipping pens getting ready for loads to head out starting Monday morning and throughout the week. 🐷

Farm Terminology: Farrowing

Farrowing is the process of a sow giving birth to piglets. It’s an important stage on a pig farm because the first few hours and days can make a big difference in the health of both the sow and her litter. Pig farmets keep a close eye on the sow during this time, making sure she is comfortable and that the piglets are nursing properly and staying warm and dry. Lots of careful watching, attention to small details, and quick care help give the piglets a healthy start in life.

Today I was on a messaging thread with a fellow from Uganda asking questions about building out his program. The first thing that popped into my head, the first question I asked, was what is your end goal?

Then I thought to myself, what is my end goal?

Mine has always been family first and not becoming a slave to the farm, which is easy to do and happens to all of us. I want to be able to work until my body can’t do it anymore, but also have the freedom to leave the ranch whenever I want and know it still operates without me.

I want to create a business and a place where if my nieces, nephews, or children want to come back and work, or see a future within this industry, there’s a spot for them.

I want my wife to be able to do whatever she wants in life.

And for the land, by the time I’m done farming, I’d like it to be both a hog farm and a wildlife sanctuary.
Everybody’s building something, but what’s your end goal?

Anybody else spend half their day fixing things pigs never even touch?

One step we take to help create a fat hog is making sure they have proper shade during the summer months.

This shade structure started life as an old cotton trailer and was converted into a lean-to style shade wagon. Easy to move from pen to pen, highly effective, and if you don’t anchor it down… it’ll end up in the next county with the first good wind.
