The Glass Fire started in the Deerpark area just east of the Silverado Trail in Saint Helena. It has moved further east towards Angwin (Howell Mountain) and floating embers have spread the fire norht towards Calistoga, then jumped the valley floor twords Highway 29. This video was taken Sunday, September 27, 2020 at 7:20PM, when the fire was affecting only the hils east of the Silverado Trail.

How does smoke affect grapes on the vine?
Fire Update: Napa Valley, itself, did not have fires. However, east of the Silverado Trail a few miles, Atlas Peak was hit at the ridge as well as the ridge line east of Yountville and Oakville, as well as Pope Valley east of Angwin. We are starting to see the Hennessey fire retreat. The Walbridge fire in Sonoma County has affected vineyards near Russian River, as the fire line ranges approximately 2-4 miles from the river. As of this post, the overall Lightening Complex fires are 33% contained.

Smoke is what we are concerned with in Napa Valley. Smoke permeates the grape skins, which has little influence on white wine, which are fermented without the skins. Red grapes are fermented with the skins. So smoke taint ruins red wine, introducing flavors like, ashtray, and other descriptors. We have our fingers crossed. Each day, the wind has changed direction several times, including blowing the smoke away, thank goodness.

The attached photo was taken along Dunaweal Lane with the vineyard in the foreground at Clos Pegas Winery (https://www.clospegase.com/) about 6:30 PM with the sun starting to set over the Mayacamus north and west of Calistoga.
