Last week we shared the journey of how our hospitality experience has evolved since the brand’s inception, and posed a simple question: Why visit? The answer has always been about the connection - to the place and people that ultimately shape the w**es. While we love welcoming you to Napa Valley, we equally love knowing that the Hourglass experience continues far from our home every time a bottle is opened around your table, shared with family and friends.

Since acquiring Blueline Estate in 2006, we’ve worked vintage by vintage to unlock the full potential of this remarkable site. Each w**e offers a different expression of Blueline, but together they tell the complete story of the estate; its power, depth, energy and refinement. Whether experienced with us at the Estate or opened at home, we hope the 2024 Blueline w**es bring a little piece of Hourglass to your table.

When guests first started inquiring about visiting the Blueline Estate, Carolyn and Jeff wondered why..? Why visit? We had no fancy hospitality quarters, no tasting room, and no staff, but we indulged those first requests. The “tour” consisted of dodging the forklift, stepping over hoses, and tasting on a barrel head with the production crew as they went about their day. This spartan modern aesthetic fit our architect’s proclamation that he would design an anti-Napa w**ery for us. This immediately appealed to our punk, DIY sensibilities. Unwittingly, this early aesthetic conditioned our hospitality philosophy: strip away the unnecessary pomp and pretense and put our customers in the center of what we do. Our w**es are a reflection of who crafts them and the place that they are from. It’s all symbiotic; the fewer degrees of separation, the more intimate the experience and ultimately the deeper the relationship and connection.
 
Over the years we’ve added a few design refinements, but the ethos remains the same: be passionate, be creative, stay real and make it all accessible! 
 
As we embark on our 29th harvest, the w**ery is buzzing at the front end of what is shaping up to be another in a series of killer vintages. If you have never visited, you must! If you have been many times, we guarantee it will never be the same when you return. Harvest is a particularly magic moment, and we encourage you to experience it. If you can’t make it this year, just a quick heads up that we will be releasing the epic 2024 Blueline Estate 36, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc today, Tuesday September 14th, at 10:00AM PST.

This year marks a decade with Hourglass for Ian Fenwick, now Vice President and Partner, who has spent those ten years welcoming hundreds of Hourglass fans — new and returning — into our cave for tastings, sharing the HG story and w**es.

Ian’s journey started far from the vineyard; he grew up in England, before finding a new home in Napa Valley, where he now lives with his wife, Brooke, and their two young children, Charlie and Lennon.

As Jeff approached the w**ery he could see the dynamite locker cracked ajar and one of the engineers peering inside. "I’ll be honest, it was pretty cool cocktail chatter to claim you possessed a dynamite locker and about 3,000 pounds of TNT. Even more thrilling was to actually detonate it in 50 to 100 lb increments over 46 blast days. A simple hit of the plunger, and a cup of coffee? Trust me, you get a lot done on those days!” This was Jeff’s life for the year we built the cave system at the w**ery. On this particular day, toward the end of the dig, the engineer was taking inventory. It turned out there was a half box of dynamite left, and according to the engineer, the job was “finished.” Jeff inquired what might happen to the balance of his dynamite? The engineer politely replied that we would be getting a credit for the idle sticks. Of course, we all know that age old axiom; “a job is never done if there is leftover dynamite.” He looked at Jeff with a puzzled expression. “Graham, I don’t want a credit; by definition we’re not done, let’s freestyle with it,” Jeff replied. Graham’s puzzled expression quickly changed to concern as he responded, “Jeff, free styling with dynamite is not a thing!” Well, maybe it wasn’t, but it is now.” The net result of a half box of dynamite, and the free association to not overthink how it was applied, created one of the most magical tasting salons in Napa Valley. If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing it, we encourage you to schedule a visit as your Summer/Fall travel plans come into focus.

If you can’t make the trek to visit this year, you can always appreciate us from afar with the Spring releases of the 2024 Blueline Estate Merlot, Malbec and the 2025 Sauvignon Blanc, closing tomorrow.

More importantly, we just received our Napa County approval for cave expansion, and are looking forward to the future date when the dynamite locker returns. Freestyle anyone…?

DJ Alberto, will be spinning vinyl, paired with iconic bubbles and Chardonnay from my personal cellar and co-host **e stellar collection, ushering in weekend in proper fashion. Our oven will be fired up, pizza pies spinning and the crushpad jammin’.

In w**e, as in music, it’s all about the groove. Our play list reflects the high pulsing energy of Premiere week in Napa Valley. As one of the top three lots at Premiere ’25, we turned the volume up to 11 this year with two lots: Cortina, a unique Cabernet blend showcasing the gravel Cortina soils at the Blueline Estate, and Mabon Chardonnay from the Hyde Ranch.
