As Jeff approached the winery he could see the dynamite locker cracked ajar and one of the engineers peering inside. "I’ll be honest, it was pretty cool cocktail chatter to claim you possessed a dynamite locker and about 3,000 pounds of TNT. Even more thrilling was to actually detonate it in 50 to 100 lb increments over 46 blast days. A simple hit of the plunger, and a cup of coffee? Trust me, you get a lot done on those days!” This was Jeff’s life for the year we built the cave system at the winery. On this particular day, toward the end of the dig, the engineer was taking inventory. It turned out there was a half box of dynamite left, and according to the engineer, the job was “finished.” Jeff inquired what might happen to the balance of his dynamite? The engineer politely replied that we would be getting a credit for the idle sticks. Of course, we all know that age old axiom; “a job is never done if there is leftover dynamite.” He looked at Jeff with a puzzled expression. “Graham, I don’t want a credit; by definition we’re not done, let’s freestyle with it,” Jeff replied. Graham’s puzzled expression quickly changed to concern as he responded, “Jeff, free styling with dynamite is not a thing!” Well, maybe it wasn’t, but it is now.” The net result of a half box of dynamite, and the free association to not overthink how it was applied, created one of the most magical tasting salons in Napa Valley. If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing it, we encourage you to schedule a visit as your Summer/Fall travel plans come into focus.

If you can’t make the trek to visit this year, you can always appreciate us from afar with the Spring releases of the 2024 Blueline Estate Merlot, Malbec and the 2025 Sauvignon Blanc, closing tomorrow.

More importantly, we just received our Napa County approval for cave expansion, and are looking forward to the future date when the dynamite locker returns. Freestyle anyone…?

In wine, as in music, it’s all about the groove. Our play list reflects the high pulsing energy of Premiere week in Napa Valley. As one of the top three lots at Premiere ’25, we turned the volume up to 11 this year with two lots: Cortina, a unique Cabernet blend showcasing the gravel Cortina soils at the Blueline Estate, and Mabon Chardonnay from the Hyde Ranch. Both wines are eclectic with a deep, soulful groove. If you can’t attend Premiere NV, you can feel the vibe with our Crosseyed & Painless playlist ~ influenced by one of the funkiest
Mofos to ever pen a song. Shout out to David Byrne...

It’s quite surreal, with just two winemakers, to realize we’ve been making wine at the Hourglass Estate for 29 harvests. 2025 marks Tony Biagi’s 14th harvest at Hourglass; an impressive run yielding some of our greatest wines produced. However, until recently, we had not conducted a comprehensive tasting of Tony’s body of work. As a small family business, we are so caught up trying to advance the ball, that we rarely think about the past. So, it’s no great surprise that the idea of a retrospective wasn’t even our own. The idea was proposed to us by the renowned critic . Lisa has plenty of experience reviewing our wines for The Wine Advocate, The Wine Independent, and her current publication, , but this time she wanted to take a deep dive into Hourglass through the lens of Tony’s tenure.

What emerged was a waterfall of impressive scores across the board; a lovely acknowledgement of Tony’s dedication toward taking Hourglass to the next level. But, equally important, was the demonstration of the aging arc. Thirteen years out, the 2012 was in its butterfly state. 2015 was a warm vintage that produced a more opulent style; one that we assumed would not age gracefully. Lo and behold, the ’15 is a testament to the greatness of the site, and Tony’s prowess as a winemaker. More impressive was the 2014. This wine blew our minds. An average vintage upon release, the 2014 jumped out of the glass with soaring aromatics not yet formed upon release. Rummage your cellar and, if you still have any, see for yourself.

Undoubtedly you have heard the hype about the 2023 vintage. The hype is merited. From the jump the 2023 Hourglass Estate Cabernet, which will release today Tuesday February 3rd is a contender for the greatest Hourglass vintage of all time. This wine has it all and we are very excited to share it with you.

Continuing “The Why” Campaign. A video series dedicated to the who, what, why and how of our winemaking inspirations.

Our “why” begins long before harvest. Why does Hourglass exclusively use French Oak barrels? Our Associate Winemaker Adrien traveled to France to walk the forests and cooperages where our barrels are born; to understand how each tree’s life affects the wines fermenting in our caves. To learn the foresting practices and harvesting of French oak barrels, and how that impacts our wines. This knowledge provides deep insight, and informs how our wines evolve in the stillness of the caves. Watch here to uncover this “why”.
