What a night at last Friday!
We were thrilled to share our wines and dive into the fascinating history of Clone 6 – the Jackson clone of Cabernet Sauvignon.

This rare selection traces its roots back to Dr. Austin Goheen of UC Davis, who in 1963 rescued Clone 6 from a forgotten vineyard at the former University of California Foothill Experiment Station in Jackson, CA. The station, abandoned since 1903, left its vines undisturbed for over 50 years — a true time capsule of viticultural history.

This rediscovery was a game-changer. By 1969, Clone 6 appeared on the list of registered vines and was planted in the FPS Classic Foundation Vineyard. After undergoing advanced tissue culture therapy in 2009, it was formally released as Cabernet Sauvignon 06.1—a cleaner, virus-free foundation for future vineyards.

At Gubel Family Vineyards, we’re proud to work with this unique clone, known for producing wines of concentrated structure, depth, and intensity—a perfect expression of our volcanic soils in Calistoga.
