Picture this: You’re an hour away from home, hauling a newly picked-up post-pounder to help fence in your new pasture, when your phone rings. It’s the neighbor. The cows are out. 😬

Some curious cattle decided this evening was the perfect time for an unauthorized taste-test of the new pasture.
Our working theory is one of them (my money is on the little one) put their head through the gate, got stuck, and in the panic to get free, somehow managed to lift the entire gate completely off its supports. Boom. Freedom.

We’ve heard horror stories of escaped cattle taking hours to corral, blocking roads, and redecorating neighbors' properties. We were bracing for the worst on the drive back.

Enter Darrell, a feed bucket, and a whole lot of luck. As soon as Gelly spotted him holding her bucket, she gave up on her life of crime and happily trotted right back where she belonged, little one following right behind. Apparently, sweet feed trumps fresh orchard grass! 🪣

I guess they figured if they were going to have an adventure, they’d better get it out of their system before the new fence goes up! Lesson learned: Never underestimate a cow with a mission.

How do you keep an 11 year old entertained without a screen during summer vaca? Simple: just add animals!

There’s no better way to grow up than with a critter by your side. It builds character, teaches empathy, and guarantees you'll never have a boring afternoon.

If this kiddo doesn’t end up in the FFA in high school I’ll be shocked. He doesn’t look at much as work and he volunteers to do as much as we’ll let him. From cleaning stalls to cutting grass to being a perch for feathered friends, by the time we’re ready to fill the pasture he’s going to be running the whole show. 😊

It’s official! I’m now a graduate of the Virginia Master Cattleman Program! 🎓✨

Each of the 8 weekly seminars were a wealth of information and it was such a rewarding experience. I am grateful to have been able to participate and learn from some of the best in the industry. I’m itching to get this sign mounted on the gate and even more excited to apply everything I’ve learned to our daily operations.

We’re up to 14 little nuggets and we’re still waiting for one more momma to bring her babies home. I could sit and listen to them for hours; their putts, chirps and purrs are one of natures sweetest symphonies 🎶 and watching them figuring all this out is pretty entertaining, too 😍🐥

We’re in a holding pattern over here. Lots of waiting. Waiting on the seed we planted to start coming up. Waiting on turkey eggs to hatch; we have two hens setting on eggs right next to one another under the porch steps and one setting in a raised planter, and two who’s hiding places we haven’t found yet. We’re also waiting to find out if AI was successful and Gelato is bred back or not🤞. A lot of things on the horizon once we get past all the waiting. Have I mentioned how impatient of a person I am? 😬
