A year has passed since I posted a picture of 6 heifers we retained to expand our herd (top). The ladies are preparing to deliver their first calves and take their place as productive dams in Walnut Hills operation (bottom). Sadly, the picture doesn’t do justice to how good these girls are. Nonetheless, we wanted to share their progress. Let us know what you think.

Walnut Hills is developing a nice set of bull calves for 2027. We’ve built our herd on selecting the right cows and then pairing them with the right AI and field service sires to push out our herd’s efficiency frontier out and improve our animals performance. The two bull calves pictured will be offered this spring—WHH Polycarp 01P and WHH Procoplus 04P. They’ve been developed on milk and pasture, and from their faces, you can see they’re well feed. The cost of beef keeps rising not because of the producers or small processors but because of the endless money printing (quantitative easing) and reckless fiscal policy (pick your war and large social program). It’s simple, if you can’t cover your costs, a business must close. 😑

Continental growth almost always costs you at calving, and this breed is the exception.

Most Continental breeds buy their growth with harder calvings. Salers is one of the exceptions in the research.

In U.S. Meat Animal Research Center data, calf survival to weaning tended to be higher in the breeds that needed less assistance at birth. The breeds named in that group were Hereford-Angus, Shorthorn and Salers. That is two British-type entries and one Continental.

But Salers does not sit in the British column on growth. In the MARC characterizations, calves sired by Salers, Gelbvieh, Maine-Anjou and Simmental were moderate to high in growth rate and mature size, high in lean to fat ratio, moderate in age at puberty, and moderate to high in milk production.

Salers also ranked among the top breeds for total retail product, behind Charolais, Piedmontese, Chianina and Holstein.

Growth, yield, milk, and a calf that gets up on its own. That is a rare combination, and it is why Salers turns up in rotational programs where heifers get kept back.

I love this picture of the battle of the bulls. Big Sky Destination 21L is the mature bull, and the calf is one of his sons, WHH Photius 03P. They’re competing for the affections of WHH MS Fancy 14L. Photius has some s***k, but the big man ran him off after the calf’s breeding attempt. The little guy is going to be a good one in the spring, a chip off the old block for sure.

Walnut Hills is blessed to have a fine group of fall and spring calves. The bulls and heifers are growing nicely and we expect the will be exceptional seedstock. Bulls will be available for private treaty starting in November and bred heifers in March 2027. We will post updates from time to time so check-in to see how calves are developing. Walnut Hills has experienced strong demand for our seedstock cattle in 2026. We’ve added many new customers and continued serving past ones. Pictured is a bull held back to breed our heifers, WHH Noah 04N, a HB and HP sire with easy calving and fleshing numbers. We’re grateful to a past customer who has purchased numerous bulls over several years for referring a new customer in needing a herdsire. It’s an honor to receive this kind of support so here is a shoutout to David and Brian. As always, let us know what you think.

Walnut Hills is participating in Southern Eagle Ranch’s 10th Annual Generation of Genetics sale on Saturday March 21st at the Lynchburg Livestock Market at 1:00 PM. We are offering two triples. WHH MS Precious 05J with a heifer calf on her side and confirmed bred 55 days to Big Sky Destination 21L a trait leading PB HB HP Salers bull. The other cow is WHH MS Stetson 16J, who has a bull calf at her side and is bred 80 days with a bull calf sired by TJ Arrowhead 263G, a trait leading Simangus sire.
