We are so grateful to the Callicoon Center Band – an extraordinary force of community spirit here in Callicoon Center, NY that has lasted for close to 100 years!
Every summer, a group of around 50 community volunteer musicians gathers on Wednesday nights for 10 weeks to play music, led by conductor Jim Newton. They play for exactly an hour. Patriotic and popular music fills the air, traffic stops, pies are auctioned to support the fire department, lawn chairs are spread out on the grass, and at times people dance in the street. After an hour, everyone disperses.
Filmmaker Alice Elliot captured this spirit in her short documentary film about the band, and it’s available to watch this link.
This is a time capsule of rural life in the Catskills, and we are so glad to be part of this community.
