Wild Cleavers
A spring herb for movement, flow, and gentle clearing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What Are Cleavers?
If you’ve ever walked through your garden or along a creek and come back covered in a clingy, velcro-like plant… you’ve already met cleavers!
This quirky trailing herb grows abundantly like vines, reaching and attaching itself to everything it touches - a reflection of what it does inside the body.
How to Identify
• Thin, sprawling stems that tangle and climb
• Leaves grow in whorls (like little green stars)
• Covered in tiny hooks (it sticks to your skin and clothes)
• Found in early spring, especially in moist soil, along creeks, fences & garden edges
A Note from the Garden:
Fresh cleavers are best.
Each morning, you can gather a small handful and drop them into cold water, letting the plant gently infuse throughout the day. When the season passes, freezing fresh cleavers helps carry their benefits forward.
Harvesting Tips;
• Gather young, vibrant plants in early spring
• Avoid areas treated with chemicals
• Use fresh whenever possible - dried cleavers lose much of their vitality
A Bit of Old Wisdom:
Cleavers have long been used as a “spring clearing herb” , helping the body awaken & move after the stillness of winter.
Where it grows abundantly, it often signals exactly what the body may be needing ( I needed them at the exact same time I discovered them on my property!)
