The 2026 batch of chicks (26 of them!) are a little over 7 weeks old - I realized I last did a post about a month ago and things have been very eventful over the past month! I finished a new coop and spent the last few days completing the fencing around the new coop area. The chicks are not tiny any more and were getting very crowded in the 5 foot round stock tank. The new coop is 16 by 4, almost 3 times the square footage but also complete with roosting bars, a nesting box area (for future use), sides that drop open for easy cleaning, and an automatic door with a ramp to make it easy for them to enter and exit.
The big move happened last night - after dark, I turned off the lights in their area and either 1 or 2 at a time, put them in a large dog carrier on a cart.
I rolled the cart out to the new area, then, most 1 at a time, put them inside their new coop in the dark. Chickens are easiest to pick up and move in the dark, because they really can’t see well and tend to not freak out as much because they can’t see you reaching for them.

They spent the night in the new coop, then the automatic door opened early this morning. It was darker and rainy, so I was not surprised to see all of them still in the coop this morning, so I used leveraged their love of corn and sunflower chips to lure them to the door with a trail of snacks. Most, if not all made it out of the coop today and began exploring their new area. The adults on the other side of their area were very curious if not jealous. Tomorrow might be a “mandatory” field trip out of the coop for everyone, just to make sure they find their food and water outside the coop. I’ve got many photos and videos to share!
We will now call these the “interns” or the “ladies in waiting” or maybe something else! It will be at least 2 to 3 months before we should start seeing any egg laying activity.

In case you were wondering, the new chickens are:
7 Midnight Majestic Marans (lay dark brown eggs)
2 Barred Rock (lay tan eggs)
5 Easter Eggers (lay either tan, blue, pink, or green eggs)
1 Rhode Island Red (lay tan eggs)
11 Americana - (lay either tan, blue, pink, or green eggs)

Our latest “draft” of chicks are now almost 3 weeks old! We ended up getting 4 more chicks for a total of 26 chicks.
It will be another 4 to 5 weeks before they are ready to move outside. We have been taking advantage of the good weather to build a new coop as their new home! When the weather is nice, the girls are getting supervised free range time. I say supervised, but they sort of supervised the start of construction of the new coop. They will have their own space separated (but next to) the rest of the flock until they are large enough to mingle.

We sourced the 2nd set of “reinforcements” this morning, so we added 22 in all. Today we added 10 Americana (a type of Easter Egger) and 2 more Marans! Total cuteness at this age!

Good news, not sure news! We have added some new chicks - 10 so far and another 10 in the near future. The first batch we brought home today are 5 Midnight Majesty Marans and 5 Easter Eggers. The Marans lay dark chocolate brown eggs and the Easter Eggers lay blue, green, or brown eggs (each hen only lays 1 color, but you don’t know what color until the first egg). These are pullets, which is a fancy way of the breeder saying they are 90% confident these are hens. The next 10 will also be split between Marans and some type of Easter Egger breed.

These chicks are only a few days old, so it will be likely 5 months before they start laying eggs.

The “not sure” news - our adult hens have either decided to initiate a work slowdown or a vacation or both - egg production has dropped suddenly. This can happen seasonally, it can happen due to changes, health reasons, or hens just being hens. We haven’t noticed any health issues, so we are hoping it will correct soon. Until it does, we may need to reduce the eggs available for people getting eggs on regular basis. We’ll give you a heads up a few days ahead if we need to change the day of your eggs or the amount to expect.

It has been a while since the last post! Our girls are still working hard, and have been producing eggs throughout the winter. The flock has lost a few chickens, due to age and normal chicken health issues. Sad news, we Thelmo was one of those chickens.
We have started to let the girls do some property cleanup by giving them supervised free ranging outside of the fenced areas. It is a bit scary because we have a pair of eagles spending lots of time in the top of trees on and near our property.

We have lots of scheduled pick ups now, so the sign is not out often. For best availability, call or message ahead to get eggs!

One of our neighbors (thanks Lisa!) shared some pumpkins! I scratched a face on the surface to give the chirahna a hint for their carving activity. This is what the first hour or so looks like, sped up, then what was left a few hours later. Key lesson - never fall down in a chirahna enclosure!

It has been over 3 months since our last post, some updates! The two chicks we hatched, Boots and Dora are basically full size or near it now. Neither of them have formally expressed whether they "identify" as hens or roosters. As they are almost 16 weeks old, we should find out soon! Dora looks very much like a hen, while Boots tends to look more like a rooster.

Over the past 3 months, we have lost a number of our older hens, including our favorites, Goldie, Fluffy, and Medusa. (I know, you aren't supposed to have favorites).

We have a line on a local breeder who has juvenile hens available from heirloom breeds/crosses - we may bring in a few!

Quick update - the Carmine Brown chicks from March have started laying eggs! We found our first one yesterday!

Also, the "mirror drama" continues - today it was a tag team effort with Enrico attacking himself and then PB attacking the mirror right over Enrico!

As the 4th of July approaches, we can tell many part time Camano residents are here - requests for eggs have maxed out our current supply of eggs. We expect egg supply to pick up soon as a number of the broody hens and hens recovering from molting should start laying again soon.

MJ's girls (and roosters) have had lots of changes recently! The chicks from March have reached the age where they can start eating "laying" feed - it contains more calcium needed when they start laying, which should be within the next few weeks. This meant we could merge them with the rest of the flock, so a new automated door was added to the covered coop and the chicks had access to all other chicken areas! The merge went fairly well - there were not really any big fights, except that the large mirror we put in the chicks area became a challenge for several of the roosters and a few hens. They thought some new chickens had been added to the flock and felt the need to challenge them. PB, our "alpha" rooster spent several days fighting with himself in the mirror. His spurs actually started to get a little bloody but he recovered, at least physically.

Mama May has been great with the new chicks - we have named the grey one Dora (after Dora the explorer) and Boots is the black chick. We learned that hens actually know how to take care of chicks from the start - whenever the chicks are cold or scared, they bury themselves in Mama's feathers. Mama shows them what to eat and how to eat new things, even picking off pieces of corn to feed them.

One of our oldest hens here (Zinfandel was 7 years old) passed recent, which was a contrast to the new life brought to us with Dora and Boots.

Introducing June and July, our first successful chick hatchings! June and July hatched June 20th, and have slowly started coming out from under Mama May. We started with 8 eggs, we had at least 2 that did not survive pipping, 1 egg left intact, and three that broke during the incubation period. We definitely learned some things about setup and support, and this was also the first time for Mama May to actually incubate eggs.
